Could some1 help me with the purpose of the dryer (sp) used in fridge phase change cooling systems? was wondering if it is needed in a direct die or all phase change cooling systems?

it gets rid of moisture in the system, which can react with oil to form acid..
also it can act as storage for excess refridgerant, so u dont get liquid return in the suction line..

mmm ok i'll take that as a good idea to add it to my system, well i guess there will b 1 there already since i am using an old bar fridge with R134a and 1/8hp compressor...lol! phase change at its best...heh heh heh! good learning curve project!

You should always change the drier after opening up the system. They start to take on moisture as soon as their opened.

how effective would adding a heat exchanger be... ie: coiling the return pipe from the evaporator around the pipe leaving the condenser (before the capillary tube)?
In the above soon 2 b system i would gather that it wouldn't provide 2 much extra in terms of cooling the refrigerant leaving the condensor... but in a larger system?

wraping the cap tube around the suction line or in it should be all you need
