overload

There are three terminals on the compressor: Main (aka common), run, and start.

One side of power goes through the overload to the main terminal.

The other power lead goes to the run terminal.

The run capacitor is connected to the run terminal and the start terminal.

does it matter which plug on the cap goes to start and run
also which plug is for the power going in from the wall

so it would look like this

In your drawing, you are showing the power going to the start side of the cap. It needs to go to the run side of the cap.

how can u tell which side of the cap is start and which is run

also the cap i have is rated at 370 Volts AC but mt wall out let is 115 V and my compressor is also 115 V so i wanted to know if i can still use this cap

yes the 370 will work.

Neither side of the Cap is start or run.. only the compressor.

L1 (hot) goes to the Run and Cap. The other side of the Cap only goes to the Start winding. Then the overload connects to the common terminal and Neutral from your main power line.

so the cap is suposed to be wired up like this
yellow = AC power
red= run
black = start

What the idea of the cap? Change the phase angle of the incoming current during start up? What does that accomplish?
