My question is about propane that is used in torches (turbotorch benzomatic).
This is not pure propane as it contains a small amount of a gas with a strong natural gas like odor.
All propane that is used as a fuel has that odorant to help detect gas leaks, pure propane is odorless.
Is that propane with the added odorant good for use in refrigeration systems? I read somewhere that some of these odorants may be corrosive to copper.
I have noticed that alot of peaple in here use propane , are you using pure propane (R290) or fuel propane ?

Fuel propane

I noticed that propane after a longer use looses its odour, i have to look deeper in to it, have to find where does it puddle- oil, copper, filter ?

Ethyl Mercaptan is the most commonly used odorant, stated that it may fade due to chemical oxidation. It has 32C boiling point.
I have detected a small fading in odor when after 1 month of running a system with propane, so the odorant must have been oxidized or absorbed by oil - filter as you said.
I feel that it is not safe to use it, if it has such a high BP would it be possible to extract only propane by the cylinder by freezing to a very low temp ?
Propane suppliers warn that odorant might seperate at very low temps, i have tried at -20C but odor is still strong.

We can cool it down to ~-40c, insulate the bottle ans start puling a vacuum - the bottle will go down to ~-60C and almost all propane will boil off leaving that gunk, but it would take a while as the only energy going to the can would be heat losses

I think there is no chance getting 100% pure propane out of that mixture, i believe the question is : Does that chemical odorant causes problems in our cooling systems ?

I think the odor is just a real small part of the gas, filtering before filling your system isn't very easy. just build in a oversized filter if it bothers you.

afaik merkaptanes are the 2nd most smelling stuff in the world

it may cause problems as it contains sulflur wich can harm all parts if theres humidity and my crystalize somwhere
