not really bearable unless you're half deaf already or enjoy the sound of a boing 747 while surfing the net :D

I'll assume that's a tornado or similar?
Anyway, I find anything over 40dba to be too loud.

my rig now is quite loud, everything over 40 dBa tends to get on your nerves...
I don't know what you are referring to, but it seems like a fan you would use rather for benching then for 24/7 use...
Unless ofcourse, you get it running at 5 or 7V, that's already a bit quiter... :)
Remember the smallaer the fan the higher the pitch which make it stand out even more:( compared to larger fans. If you get a fan this loud stick it on a controller say at like wimpie007 said 5 to 7 volt which means it will still push a fair bit of air but will be alot quiter :D

it's hard to play something at 55dBA on your speakers because it will be dependant on the volume you've got them at.
it's pretty loud. i can tell you that much.

check the chart at the bottom of the page. it has a good comparison of what certain dBA levels sound like.

Remember that in most cases the 55dBa fan, like a 92mm Tornado, will be on top of the heatsink - i.e., well inside the case. There are also many other factors in determining the actual noise that your ear will hear, such as orientation of fans, the acoustics of your case, and most of all (IMO) vibration. I don't find my Tornado to produce significantly more noise at 55dBa than the rest of my 32dBa case fans - which are exposed on the side, front, and back of my case.
Obivously if you love quiet and only have one case fan, then the Tornado is not for you. Either way, you should be pairing any high-cfm fan with a rheo.
Just a comment on 120mm fans - yes, the lower pitch does make them seem less intrusive even at the same dBa. But in my case, I actually don't like them because they run at a lower pitch compared to the noise from the central A/C vent in my room. It just so happens that the 80mm fans are just about right on so I don't notice them over the A/C.

I just compared "my" hairdrier to a 80mm Delta @ 52 dBA and a 120mm Delta @ 59 dBA :D
A pretty noisy hairdrier too, IMO. The 80mm were a little less noisy, the 120mm a little more. :)

I have a 92mm vantec tornado on my sp-94, and @ 12 volts it produces 56 DBa(if i remember it correctly). At first i thougt i could live with 56dba and that ill bearly hear it when it was in my case... WRONG its defenitly UNbearable, even with music at high volume, or while playing games.
But maybe i need time to get used to it but i decided to not do that and now im runnin' it @ 7 volts and its not so ennoying.
You could do the same: try it @ max power and if you dont like it put it @7 volts it'll still move a lot of air i think (mine does), or use a rheobus like shrae said

mine was too loud even at 7v. it really all depends on your definition of LOUD.

I have a 80cm Tornado, and at full blast, i can hear it on my 2nd floor. If im in my room with the tornado, i have to turn my tv all the way up (literally) and i can still hear the tornado. Currenly i have it at about 3k rpm (care of my psu) and it's still pretty loud, it's not unbearable, but you can still hear it pretty well.
