Hi, Ive been strapped for cash lately but still striving for a better 3d mark score (deadly combo :P) when i looked at all these xtreme posts about sticking a cpu heatsink on the gpu core I thought "why not".

I had a spare socket A cooler lying around and didnt need to buy anything at all.
I took the card out, sat the cooler on the core and noticed it fitted almost exact, sitting about a millimetre from all restrictions (resistors, memory heatsinks)
I then used a pencil and marked through the card onto the heatsink where the mounting holes will be.
Next I had to rip some of the heatsinks fins off to get the drill to where it was going to em... drill.
Drilled the holes, sat the heatsink on matched perfectly
Following this I had more gd luck, the original screws from hercules Bl00 gpu cooler fitted through nicely and I also managed to keep the stock back heatsink!! :toast:
After screwing it on tightly and shaking rapidly holding the heatsink to check how firm it was I decided it was time to try it out.
I did ofcourse take it off again and apply some thermal paste ppl
Booted up and all went well blah blah overclocking....

This was the best bit, with stock cooling my card could only do 420/360 which I know isnt a great stock overclock.
With the new heatsink in place it sits at 455/390 :slobber: completely artifact free and the front heatsink is cold/back is warm.
35 gpu gains was a gift itself, but an extra 30mhz gain on the memory was totally unexpected :toast:

The mem and back gpu heatsinks as i said are only warm when running at these speeds so im guessing some volt mods are in order?

Anyway heres a pic.....

Any suggestions/comments welcome

Lastly thnx alot too everyone before me who has done this cause you've helped me alot in doing this :toast:

nice job man(nice nick too)....I recently threw on a intel HSF from a 2.4C with the copper core......had to hacksaw it for 40 minutes to make sure it was dead center....tried it without a fan and in passive mode turned off the comp after 5 minutes of gaming.......heatsink was around 150 degrees F....but no artifacts...threw on the stock fan after modding it.....so far same results...i get 40 more on the core and 20 more on the mem just at same volts....so def better than that thing they call a stock cooler....

Those are some very nice gains...

I even have a better HSF than that but mine didn't respond as well. I got +25 on the core and it did not affect the memory (but the ramsinks did).

hm my memory clock decreased when i added better cooling, but im watercooling the gpu, so there is NO airflow over the memory wich seems to be worse than warm air on the memory... get around 5-10mhz less from the memory now [330 before 320 now artifact free (infinion 3.3ns)]

Congradulations, Those are the kind of mods my wallet likes.. glad you had some nice results!

cool man:up:. I did the same thing on my 9600PRO two months ago and only gain 15MHz on the core and no on the MEM. I hope i will get more then that w/ Vmods, Chiller, TEC, DI.

Gotta say thats awesome to hear!

I stuck a VGA Silencer on my 9800 Pro... all I can say is that its not any better for overclocking than say a stock HSF...

But regaurdless of its overclock potential, or lack there of, the VGA silencer still removes a good load of heat that my 9800 Pro puts out normally into my case but instead of it going in my case it goes outside into my room creating a very nice breeding frenzy zone for all sorts of bacteria everywhere lol.

My room turned into a sauna cause of my computer, and VModding my mobo didn't help lol

I'm going to have to mod my spare socket 462 amd hsf to fit on my 9800 pro, just need to make sure that my SB Audigy 2 ZS will be able to fit under it still as I'll never use stock audio on a motherboard unless its SS

All in all good work m8! :toast:

hmmm i heard the vga silencer from arctic cooling is almost as good as a cpu hsf, maybe your card is maxed out already? i thougt about getting the vga silencer as well as its cheap, cools very nice and can be set to silent mode where it is absolutely unhearable even though it still cools better tan the default hsf.

was it easy to mount?

Don Vito !!! don't shoot me !!! :D :D but how come you ran out of money?? :D :D

BTW 455/390 is awesome man.... vmod involved??

here is mine, with amd / p3 hsf:

Good to see it all worked out. I prefer watercooling myself for cooling.

lol i dunno asw7576, my money dissapears and computer bits come in the post, i dont understand it :S
Its not got any vmods on it yet, I asked at the top if maybe vmods are in order since the heatsinks of both memory and core are only warm.

I would volt mod it. I put a spark 7 on an volt modded XT. I had a giant II on before with ram sinks. Before the volt mod and with the giant II it would max at about 480s/410s. After volt mod with giant II it was 515/420 and after the spark 7 535/435. I put a 947u on for a day and got it up to 548/435, but I need some longer screws to keep it tight to the core so I took it off. I took the vgpu up to 2.17 without any problems. I usually just leave it at 1.95v and its artifact free at 490/414

sounds gd pkrew, ill read up and get some printouts for the vgpu mod.

Did the same with my Sapphire 9600XT
went from a max of 535/700 to 560/700

Wow that is massive for RV360! Give it some volts and it will go to 650 or 700 even :D
