View Full Version : How would I go about modding my Prommy to R507?
I plan on getting one, and changing it out for R507. What all would I need to do, and what all would I need to upgrade? Thanks for you help guys.
And if you couldn't already tell, I'm a complete n00b when it comes to phase change cooling and its liquids. So please, bare with me.

Might want to post this in the phase change cooling section for better response. There's a ton of information in there from guys like bowman, captaincascade, garyloyd and others who have a ton of experience and wisdom when it comes to phase change, modding prommys, etc.

In fact one or two of those guys is probably who you would want to do the gas change for you.

If I recall you would need to go to an AC repair place and ask them to evacuate (that doesn't sound right for some reasons) your compressor, and recharge it with R507.
But I would think R507 is pretty expensive compared to R404 no?

How much better does it work?

I'd like to know about the whole R404 vs R507 thing as well. I looked in the phase-change section, but most of the stuff there got waaay over my head waaay too quick.
So, if you had to explain this in most basic terms possible, whats the deal? For example, temp diff, cost diff, etc. Even approximate figures would give us a good idea.
Anyone knowledgeable? Please?

Few pro's at modding compressor's don't use R507 because of the cost/performance ration compared to that of the R404 is not enough to warrant switching.
For example well known custom phase change guru Herefishy, doesn't use R507 for his custom made coolers because he doesn't beleive that the performance that comes from switching to R507 from R404 is good enough for the cost.
For the most part I think it was around 15C difference from R404 to R507 or smaller than that.

OK good to know. Thanks Schroet. So... R404 being the good one to use as far as price/performance... what is the approximate cost to do a conversion to R404 on a Mach 1 lets say. Just trying to get a rough idea, dollar wise.

R404A is R507 with a little R134a added to it. The performance is very similar, with R507 having a slight edge. Also similar are R408A and R402A, although these will eventually be phased out. All of these have been developed as substitutes for R502, which has already been phased out.

Done by someone who knows Exactly what needs to be done, I would guess around $200. At your local AC dude, maybe $125-150 and maybe worse performance, ask Semper-Fi about that one.
So, what all would need to be done? I'd still want it to fit in the original case came, and if thats a problem, then I guess I'm not modding it.
