View Full Version : FLAT, Cupper 1U cooler

Hi all,

I've got my new beast, and it rocks ;) It's a Shuttle SB75G2, and it's cooking my Radeon 9800Pro alive :P

The thing is, the stock Hercules cooler can't really hold teh card cool enough, at least not cool enough for some overclocking ;) So I want a new vidcard cooler, and the most appropriate solution seems to me is a 1U cupper cooler.

Only problem is I've only got 1.8CM form core to case :p

Does anyone know a 1U cooler that's that flat?

Thanks,

BD

the Alpha PAL153 is 1.5CM tall, but that is without a fan. you've have to find a pretty thin fan, or maybe rig something up with a blower type fan offset to one side.

you could also look into lapping some of the base off of the heatsink, and maybe trimming the pins a little so the fan could actually fit. maybe you could mod the side of the case so that the fan vents directly out the side?

Putting the fan as a kind of blowhole in the case is no option, I have some gorgeous mesh, and I won't cut in there ;)

The CoolJag 1U is an excellent low-profile socket A cooler that can be adapted to many video cards. Worth a look, http://www.1coolpc.com/jag.htm

Total assembled dimensions are 60x60x25 mm.

Damned, that's like 6-7 MM too thick :( Don't think i'll ever find something ...

O/C'ing a uATX box will often require some creative case modding. You may have to forgo whatever limits you to 1.8cm or mod up with a blow-hole or something. 2.5cm isn't much WRT height, you certainly aren't going to easily find a conventional fan less than 10mm in height.

If you could make a mod that used air from outside the case blowing on just the heatsink it might work. I mean, use something like the CoolJag but without the attached fan. The CoolJag heatsink is only 10mm in height so if you could get a stream of air blowing over that heatsink it might work.

Yes indeed, the only thing I need then is a non-conventional fan :/ a fan that blows to it's side, not down like a regular fan, if you know what I mean ...

yeah, i think it's called a blower, but the intake is generally on the side, so you'd probably have to mod some kind of grill into the side of the case.

It's the same on the other side BTW

well, if you could find one of the "blower" type fans, say from a GF4 video card, then you might be able to use it.

Would this work? http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29157

Much to thick unfortunately ...

How much hight do you have above the card? If you block the back and front of a fan off and cut out 2 of the sides (opposite), then it will work as a (inefficient) blower fan. mod that onto the side of a 1u cooler and it might give you enough airflow to keep it cool without moding your mesh. Failing that, build a custom duct and mount the fan flat on top of it.

(edit, the holes should be larger and lined up better, but it has a max spaced distance thingy which is stoppin me making a good diag for ya)

The ***'d bits are where air would either go in or out. The largest would go into the top side of a 1u cooler, the right hand side would just give you airflow over the backside of the card. I made one of these for a mate out of plastic, but i cant find a pic of it :( Beware though, you will have restricted airlflow due to inefficiencies in the design and you will need to use something with a fair bit of power behind it (i used a delta fan, made one hell of a racket :D )

Even if you used some sort of blower it couldnt be more than 1.8cm wide. It simply wont happen.

I have a shuttle case too and even with the cooljag 1U cooler, there was no way it was going to fit in. Had to use the 9800pro stock cooler. Not any overclocking going on with it though.

This would make a nice little Northbridge or GPU Cooler:

Looks pretty as well actually

hey, that might even fit in the 1.8 CM of space he's got too! :p:

anyway, you might be able to find a very thin blower out of a laptop. i just opened up my n400C, and it's got a pretty small blower that pushes a decent amount of air.

good luck!

Perhaps something like this with a homemade duct. http://www.nidec.com/gamma26/gamma26.htm
I'm sure a bunch of other popular fan manfactorers make similar products.
Heres another example
http://www.ystechusa.com/blowers_50-80.html
The idea with the blower fan is that you could do a 90 duct coming in from the side of your case.
I would get one of the cooljag coolers and just file it down till it fits, As they are cheap and preform well.
