Im gonna be doing several vmods today and i was just wondering what you guys do to hold down the VRs after you have soldered and stuff. Im gonna be mounting the video card VRs right to the PCB so what should i use? I have used hot glue before but it has come off once from turning the VR since it was a little warm. So what do u suggest?

Super glue does the trick.

Will it come off later if i need it to? Leave any marks? ;)
Personaly I prefer to use an "experiment board". It makes for a very clean setup and is easy to remove.

Hot glue. Easy and fast to put on and it usually peels off with ease.

lol i didnt even notice the "attack" till now.
Anyone know how removable the super glue is?

If you want to "attack" a VR I suggest either a Sledge Hammer or maybe a blow torch, certain shotguns may work well too...
But if you simply want to hold it down hot glue works wonders. It holds it in place very strong and applying very little pressure will remove it without leaving any marks.

One drop is all it takes and it will pop right off when you need it too. Might leave a slight mark if you use too much.

malves your avatar is rediculous :D
Hot glue. You can also use it on the wires to keep them tight against the board.

dont use superglue if you want to remove itlater, you will never be able to remove it without leavin clear marks and you will probably damage the pcb if you glue it on there and later try to remove it.

Thank you. I just went to like 4 stores and they all said 30 gauge wire doesnt exist

Hummm...I like to use IDE cable. Just split it. ;)

when i want it to be permanent i use bogey, the rest of the times i use poo.
if you want to remove evidences of superglue a huge meat grinder will do.

I know you never told me to....just going by what mickey mouse has told me.
I have another question though, Is it ok to put some flux on the pcb, cuz in my practicing, it helped a lot.

If you want to buy thin guage wire, look for wire-wrap wire. I have some 28-guage here, single stranded and teflon insulated. Really hard to strip off the insulation, it wasn't made to be stripped.

I use some sealstring, which I have laying around. Sounds odd, but it doesn't leave any traces and is easy to remove.

Nice idea. I have some seal string even though i dont have phase change or a even a water chiller or anything.....
So can anyone tell me if putting a lilttle flux on the PCB/Solder area will hurt?

I throw in the hot glue idea also.
Easy to pop anything off that it is holding down and doesnt take much.

I prefer silcone, it holds better than hot glue and can be removed with out damage to the board.

I've NEVER used flux. I've been soldering for years and I never found the need. Just put a tiny bit of solder on your wire, the component to be soldered, and the tip of the iron and you should be set. I guess flux could be used but I've never used it in the... 10+ yrs I've been soldering.
Good luck! :toast:

Hot glue always did the trick for me, ORB.

hmmm. I had just been using super glue on my motherboard vmods. Like the vdimm mods always seem to work real weel with a VR glued to the 4th pci slot. I had heard though that superglue could eat away at the pcb if glued right on it. Because of that I went out to the craft store and got a hot glue gun. I used it on my 9800pro gpu vmod, but the glue slowly lost it's hold and after a day came off the pcb. what's up with that?
Also now that flux has been brought up, does it really help all that much? I never used it, but bought some last week, and was thinking about trying it out.
