tonight I took my spare 5900 NU and flashed it with the 5950 BIOS in a atempt to see what happens/and for some free performance for games.

I used this guide HERE (http://www.cluboverclocker.com/guides/5900_Flash_Mod/) as it was the only one that gave me 100% of the information I needed to do this mod right, without sifting through endless clutter, trying to find what I really needed.

this is a Chaintech 5900 NU.
with a Abit IC7 and Prescott 2.8E, and not much else to say about it, theres no OC, and the system is pretty bland otherwise.

at first with no mod the card was clocking at 400/850.
it's max OC unmodded was 490/975.
not bad honestly, but I don't like running videocards OC'd for games unless I really need to, so that was basically just benchmarking speed at best.

After the Mod, the Card runs 475/950 stock.
mine flashed perfectly and is 100% stable.
after the flash, my card maxed out at 554/990.
the Temps went up by 2C and thats it.

upon inspecting the before and after comparision on my scores at futuremark, what I can see from the scores, is that while theres a clear improvement in all areas of the core.
the lobby scores are nearly identical.
even though the mem is 100 mhz faster...

thats abit of a puzzle to me.
I heard the reason this mod works so easily is cause the ram on the 5950 is basically slower ram then you get on the 5900 NU, cause of a increased latency for higher stable speed.
after seeing the pics I think thats true.

to me, that basically means, if your serious about overclocking the 5900NU to it's best, the 5950 will actually hinder your ability to gain more bandwidth from the Memory, then without the 5950 mod.

but thats pure speculation honestly, I can't say I know for sure why the Lobby scores are nearly identical from before and after the mod.

but I'll let you take a look at the scores yourself to see what you see, that I may have missed :)

AFTER The Mod-

BEFORE The Mod-

while I think this mod might be kinda useless if your looking for a top end 5900 NU score on the ORB, it sure does make one fine mod for general game use I will sure give it that.
it's free performance and very easy to do.

of course, like all mods, do it at your own risk ;)

Yes the 5950U is slower at the same clocks, and the memory is at fault.

However, the end result is a faster card that you could previously attain with the vanilla 5900NU because you gain so much on the core.

This mod is really only meaningful without volt mods I think. Otherwise a volt modded 5900NU is still #1.

yep-pretty much what I just said ;)

it's helpful for a game, or if your not willing to volt mod.
but if you want the absolute highest score, a volt modded 5900 NU looks like it would do better then a Bios modded and voltmodded 5900 at 5950.

for a pure gamer though-it's a hack well worth the effort in my opinion :D
