im gonna be building a sub $500 gaming rig for a friend of mine and am wondering what i could get.
Im hopin for it to get 14000 or more 3dmarks in 2001se.
I dont need a case or psu.

I was thinking intel like a c4m system
but amd is also possible.

Any input would be much appreciated

Gonna be somewhat difficult getting all of that under $500, especially once you throw in the 9800. Pricewatch lists the 9800pro128 at $213 and the 9800pro256 at $311.

DFI NForceII Ultra Infinity = $90
AMD XP 1800+ = $50
2x256 KHX3000 (BH-5) = $80-$100
NVidia 5900SE = $190
80GB WD SE HD = $60

Intel is going to get out of budget quickly.

Where can you get KHX3000 for under $100? Newegg is selling it for $138.

Pricewatch is your friend. Do a search for KHX3000 in the memory section. I see it for $61 shipped!

No guarantee on bh-5 or not.

change the 9800p to a 9600XT or 5700u, and you have about $100 extra to spend on a hard drive. ;)

But the 9800p is far better than either of those cards.

pik: why a 9600XT and not a 9600PRO, OC theyre almost the same;). And he can afford a 9800PRO, so why dont go w/ the 9800PRO

well... he still needs a hard drive he said... and with the setup charlie has setup, if he gets the $215 9800p, that leaves about $35 for a hard drive. so that leaves room for something around 40gb at max, and then no cd-drive, unless he can find one.

if he wants a cd-drive, and a bigger hard drive, he is gonna have to get a lower VC... though he could also go with a 9700, pricewatch has one shop that is selling them for $185... else, he has to go down to the mid-range VC's.

he cant afford a 60gb HD + cd-drive + 9800p.

best thing to do is buy the gfx card last, so he can see how much money he has to spend for it after everything else.

i have a cdrom that i can use.
all I need is a hard drive, 60gb would be fine if i can get one and the 9800p

Via Mobo
Via 1GHz C3
Passive HS
128Mb SD-RAM
Riva TNT 2 32Mb
10Gig HDD
14inch CRT monitor

Ok I am extracting the urine there, but thats an ubber DOS gaming box :D

Seriously now, I think either a 2000XP and a 9700Pro, or a 2800XP Barton and a 9600Pro.

My personal happy medium would be a 9800se AIW flashed with a pro bios, and clocked reasonably high, coupled with a lurvley 2500XP Barton and some PC3200 Ram. Then skimp a lil on cosmetics, and a mid sized HDD will give u a decent enuff gamers rig :)

My 2p.
