What exactly does removing the shim do for the card as far as overclocking? I think there is something wrong with my asus 9800xt, and i think it has to do with the hsf not adequately transferring the heat. does removing the shim have anything to do with a better fit? i've already takent the hsf off and put new thermal paste on it memory and core, but i still can't even overclock by 5 to 10 mhz without artifacts. Help is appreciated.

I was fortunate enough to find one cheap, due to a pricing error which was upheld (although not admitting it was a mistake). I can clock mine from 411/364 to 445/385 but 3dmarked at 5Mhz down on what atitool found stable. I have been aprehesive about removing the shim because I just borked my 9700pro by either pulling off heatsinks attached by frag tape or removing the shim. Trying to get RMA but have sniped the fan cable in half while to install waterblock. I am seeking a replacment stock fan.
Even unplugging the fan looks a nightmare, seems you need to hold in two tabs at once to pull the fan connector out of the socket on the 9700pro board.
I had it under watercooling and it ran fine for over a year.
The temperature is normally 60' c for xt.

Check for proper contact on the core with a bit of thermal paste, if it produces a nice lcean contact print the shims NOT a problem

quite sure un-oc'ed temp would be late 60's or low 70's... when i touch my albatron fx 5200's heatsink it almost burns me, i think itd be in the late 70's... OUCH. (im talking celcius ovcourse)

60'c as read off the chip's own sensor and displayed in the control panel. It does feel a little warm to the touch when overclocked, but not 60'c. Maybe deep down at the core it is 60'c.

I used riva tuner to find my GPU temp and it said 40'C rather than 60'C as in the control panel overdrive tab. I read that the 9800 series doesn suffer from the shim problem that the 9500/9700 series did. When I attached my waterblock on my 9700pro I didnt remove the shim and put shinitsu paste on the core and silicone thermal grease on the shim. I removed the shim and put the stock heatsink back on and it clocked quite high compared to the waterblock before something obviously went pop. I got some kind sole sending me an lod ati fan in post so hopefully I can RMA no probs and possible get a 9800 pro in return since they dont stock 9700pro anymore, LOL.
