View Full Version : 9800np insane voltage without vmod!

Hi, I've got a 9800np that i flashed to pro using the gigacube pro bios. Supposedly the best to get the highest memory clocks with samsung 3.3ns ram. After flashing i got to 400 while my previous high b/4 the flash was only 330mhz on the memory. Not too shaby. Before flashing the core was able to get to about 415 without artifacts. After flashing i gained about 3mhz!
Anyways, i was looking at voltmodding my card so i used my volmeter to check the core voltage. I'm getting a reading of 2volts! Is this normal? I thought it was supposed to be around 1.7? I was surprised to see it this high b/c my max overclock is only about 417-418 at this voltage. I have ramsinks and i put an athlon fan on the stock heatsink. I've got good airflow in my case too...
I'm not sure what my core voltage was b/4 the flash but does the gigacube bios set all 9800's to 2volts stock? I might try flashing back to my original bios and check the volts. If it's still 2 maybe they had to increase the voltage at the factory to get it stable?
I'm just kinda worried because i've read most of ya wouldn't go over 1.9 with near stock cooling. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Do you guys think it would still be worthwile to voltmod this? Maybe bring it to 2.05 or 2.1? It seems to be runnin quite cool and stable at its current voltage.
I'd like to be able to get 450+ on the core. I've got a stock athlon hs sitting here if needed.

Sorry guys my mistake... I tried a different voltmeter and it now reports it as 1.69 volts which is right about where it should be. I don't know what could cause my other meter to be that far off? It's reporting everything i test including AA's to be .2-.3 volts higher than normal... strange to say the least!
I guess that explains why it was running so cool. I figured it should be on fire if it was really runnin at 2volts with the stock heatsink! Albeit i have a stock athlon fan on it.
I guess my clock of 420 isn't to bad at 1.69 volts. Maybe i'll bring it up to 1.75-1.8 2morrow and see how it goes. Hopefully i can get close to 500 without getting too crazy.

who told you to use the gigacube bios for the best memory clocks?

MarginJohn over at rage3d. If you have the samsung 8E chips and 3.3ns ram getting it to clock at over 390mhz is pretty much guaranteed. I do have ramsinks but they only netted me an extra 7mhz from 396 to 403. The memory is at only 2.68v!
For 8E chipped card use the P/N 113-A07518-100 8/29/03.

renegade I was under the impression that 8E bios was for samsung 2.8ns ram, and getting up to 400mghz was also.
You are also saying you got your 3.3ns ram up to 400mghz without a volt mod?! That just sounds crazy. The 8E bios on my old 9800pro got me to 398, but the same bios on this card only got me to 384. I am not upset cause the old card would only do 416 core, while this new one does 463.
Do you have a 3DM03 link that shows your 400 mem clock?

If you have either Samsung
8E-GC2A's or 8E-GC33 and you use the P/N 113-A07518-100 bios dated 8/29/03 (the date is critical) then achieving overclocks in the 390's are almost guaranteed. It seems as if gc33 chips are commonly marked down gc2a chips to meet demand for lower rated parts.
Here's my futuremark link for proof... i guess. :)

Btw... I just vmodded my core. It's still got the stock heatsink but i put an athlon fan (60mm) on it. There are also 2 exhaust fans and a sidewindow fan right in the viscinity of the card. What do you guys think would be a safe voltage? I've currently got the core at a modest 1.75. Using an artifact tester it seems ok up to around 430mhz.
Thanks
