sunday morning, nothing to do...

so i cleaned my room a lil and found a bunch of 80mm casefans. after reading a bunch about the impact of more airflow on copper and alu heatsinks i was curious to see how my coolermaster silent heatsink (looks like the amd xp retail heatsink) would perform with my 120mm fan and ordered a 80->120mm fan adapter. when i found the casefans i had an idear how to get more airflow without waiting for the 120mm adapter to arrive.

short storry long i built a fan cube :D

i used 4 80mm and one 72mm fans. surprisingly they are not really that noisy, they are still WAY more silent than my single 60mm tornado! id say the whole thing produces around 40db probably less.

and the results are great! with ~17°C roomtemps (open window) i got this results:

cpu duron applebread 1.8@2.25ghz (13.5x166) 1.85v

default 72mm fan:
22°C case
35°C idle
46°C load

fan cube:
21°C case
30°C idle
37°C load

thats almost 10°C less! i bet on a copper heatsink i would get even better results as copper loves airflow. now i cant wait to get my 120mm fan adapter and compare the results :D

ended up removing the cube. the diferent cfm rating of the fans reduced the real cfm. im now running a 80mm high speed casefan in combo with a 60mm delta wich have about the same cfm.

i get even better temps now!

39°C idle
50°C load
at 2.45ghzwith 2.15v

not bad for a alu heatsink :)

would it b a bad idea to attach a small 60mm fan onto the side of my slk-700?

i bet a sink with a pin/helicoid design with four identical fans (leaving the top open) would be the most efficient way to do this.

anyone got one of those older Swiftech's or an Alpha to try it on?
