Due to 11 delta fans in one room I have decided to move all my computers out of my study and into the garden, so thought I would do a thread about it which I could update every so often. It might actually help me finish a project that I have started, most stop after some initial enthusiam whilst drunk.

Plan of action

1) Buy new bigger shed, burn or move current 10x6 shed.
2) Run electricity out to it
3) Wireless bridge to study
4) Fridge for beers, freezer for coolant, air con etc etc.

Outcome

By summer be able to start a 3dmark bench and then retire to the chair outside the shed door and sip an ice cold beer or :banana::banana::banana:tail while the evening sun beats down on my face and the smell of the BBQ wafts over from the other side of the patio.

Of course it is now January and that seems a long way off, it's cold and wet in southern England nothing much is done yet. Another problem is that I'd like to be spending my money on 939's /AMD64's / Ati r420's / Intel EE's / Nvidia nv40's and not planks of wood and a new chair etc etc, so something has got to give.

Current state of project.

Well, I ordered a skip for £110 and managed to get rid of all the rubbish out of the current shed. Somewhat like the Tardis there was more rubbish than the size of the shed. Now I have the option of moving what is still in there to either a different shed or move the entire shed to make space. Seems a shame to spend the cost of a nice cpu just to get rid of rubbish :(

Next are some costings

a) Cost for running electrical mains out there, concreted in and in shielded cable, some lighting and some sockets. Don't want to do this myself as I don't want to have computer problems from spikingor the whole thing sizzling or burning to the ground ;) .

b) Cost for new garden security gate and leveling the ground, also possibly moving a shed.

c) Selecting the new shed. Want something with quite big windows so lots of natural light, almost like a cheap summerhouse.

You'll be able to laugh along as I find the door is too small for the fridge or the wireless network bridge only reaches as far as the closest gnome without a booster the size of Jodrell Bank stuck in the flower bed.

Andy

Well the electrician did not turn up to give us a quote, such is the problem with small jobs, they can't be arsed quite franklin ( poor electrical joke ..sorry :) )

Oh well ,might as well string a wire across the back yard and watch the birds smoke and then fall off.

Here's a picture of the shed which is too small

here it is in context against next doors huge house

http://www.aocb77.dsl.pipex.com/project6.jpg

Now if I lived in my neighbours house I would not have to bother, but as my house is the small white one just slightly larger than the shed and we can only sleep vertically it is a problem.

So that shed has to be moved or got rid of for my new Computer House. We have another shed down the bottom of the garden which might have to be swapped out or burnt for the top shed.

I'd only just learnt how to rid that bike as well, my wife said the stabilisers could come off next week ...Nooooooooooooooo

More rubbish

Right, next I search for the new shed in the glossy's.

Oh I can see this thread slowing down the Internet more than Janet Jacksons right breast. :D

Be sure to install the fridge full of beers last, or you'll never finish it!

A mate has electric in his shed. He just ran a long extension lead suspended on a piece of rope. It's plugged into a safety circuit breaker just in case. The shed is only about 6ft away from his house, it's quite safe.

Hmmm?

Wonderful idea, however I do have one suggestion.

Do an underground power cable.

Not for safety or that such. Just run the thing over to those damn neighbors so they can support your habit :D

I hope none of the local dodgy types make off with your rig and beer in the middle of the night.

*goes off to ask google about Janet Jacksons right breast*

TDF.

Managed to get a quote for moving the shed down to the bottom of the garden and laying a foundation for the top one ( £500 ).

Also £250 for fixing a security gate around the side to stop robbers / thieves / admiring sexy geek girls getting in. The last will be able to throw their underwear over the gate though ;)

My new freezer turned up today to match the fridge, that's another £100. At this rate I am not going to be able to afford any new computer bits until 2010.

Talking about more exciting things than bits of wood and stuff, what do you think about LCD monitors ? I'll be mainly game playing in the house still but will need it for internet and benching.

I would imagine I need one with a very bright luminous screen as the sunlight might be pouring in, is their a minimum LUX value I should be looking for ? Might have the wrong terminology here.

The most important part of my shed project makes an appearance, the beer cooler. :D

Below is the reason I want to do this project ..sick of doing benching on air in mid winter with the windows open .... I'm getting too old and too cold at 3am in the morning

Ordered the new shed today, here is the picture from the brochure

http://www.aocb77.dsl.pipex.com/shed.jpg

Lots of windows and is 10x8' so should be enough space for all the stuff I want to put in it. Wireless bridge to the house will be going through the right hand wall / window.

I'm also getting a new thermometer tonight to measure temps. my cheapo job is just , er, too cheap.

Total stuff to fit in shed

1 desk
1 chair
1 monitor
1 benching rig
4 dual AMD computers
2 amps
2 REL 50w subwoofers
2 Mission front 731's
2 Mission 733 rears
1 freezer for cooling cpu and gpu
1 fridge for cooling beer

Going to be a tight fit :)

Andy
