my 8500 pro died some weeks ago and since i had some free time today i decided to "recycle" it :D
the ramsinks, the golden orb and the memory wich i plan to solder on my xabre200 to be exactly. moreover i was curious to see how the actual gpu of a 8500 looks like and id its possible to remove the ihs to get closer to the gpu and cool eventual hot-spots more efficiently.
thougt you guys might be interested to see how the ihs is set up above the gpu. the latest cards have cpu like packaging anyways (except for the fx cards)
PS: sorry for the bad quality :D
this is what the card originally looked like

memory chips, some caps and heatsink removed...

after some sanding i could lift the ihs

under the ihs i found some more of the same ceramique, the same stuff memory chips and nb/sb chips are embedded into.
i guess the ihs is meant to work as some kind of shield to protect the gpu from emi? and maybe spread the heat to the whole gpu surface...

afer some more sanding i finally reached the actual core... shiny as a cpu core, squared and even bigger than a thunderbird core.
too bad you cant see it on those pics, you can actually see parts of the printed circuits on the gpu when you let it reflect light. looks really cool... i think i will use it as a key fob

my neighbour will be back from vacation in a few days and i will try to get his cam to take some high res pics of the core.
it looks really nice!
the actual core is at least 0.1mm under the ihs, this doesnt sound like a lot, but it actually took me quite some time to sand my way through the ceramique stuff after removing the ihs, even though i used some large grid sand paper. if anybody wants to give this a try i suggest to carefully sand through the ihs on one side and carefully get a knife or needle under the ihs plate from there and life the plate in the middle. then lap it some more to get it plane and you should have the best contact to the gpu possible.

At least something was in focus LOL..
I Think you must be right about the IHS saaya, must be there as a heat spreader.

heh, cool.
pics make my eyes bleed though, for serious :) good digicam is a great investment. PCB makes a cool wallpaper if can get a good shot
this one isnt the best, room's a bit dark...but you get the idea :) canon S45 (cropped a lot)

Holy crap dude, my camera can't even dream of doing that!
Every time I even try to get twice as far away as that, its so fuzzy you can't even make anything out, and its a 2.0MP Kodak, fairly new (02' Xmas).

I should try my vivitar 3632 out for close shots.. its got 4x optical zoom.. and is 3mp through hardware interpolation.. paid $70 CDN for it.. heh.

Mine has 3x Optical and 2x Digital zoom but I don't use Zoom when I try pics like that....wouldn't it come out worse?

You should check if there is an optional macro lens kit for your camera. I have a Kodak DC4800 and the macro lens kit for it works nicely (example link (http://www.mentholmoose.com/xcard_mod/index.html)).

Is there any possibilty a Nforce2 NB is also done like this? If so could it give better cooling and heat transfer? Anybody got a board to sacrifice?

That's strange, my 8500 didn't look like that at all! It was a chip like a NB chip.. Had you lapped the GPU?
Although mine was an 8500LE.. I doubt that matters though.

Yours and his are the same, you just arent looking close enough :D
yeah, someone crack out a dead NF2 board and see if these things have a core hidden down inside there...!
Could be just the thing we are looking for to get us past some of these barriers.. heh.

Too bad I sold my 8500. :(
I don't have an NF2 board to test, but I'll put a KT333 under the knife tomorrow... :slash:

Hmmm, my 8500 died on my the other day and I had just picked it up at Gamestop a couple of months ago. If I can get an RMA, I may try this with the new one to get some max OCs out of it.
And a good digi cam is always nice, though I didn't pay that much for this 1.3 MP samsung and I get sweet closeups, like this one of an Asus board I sold someone who said it was DOA and sent it back to me, I asked him if he thought I was stupid and he obviously cut the traces putting on or taking off a HSF.

Damn you guys and your sweet closeups...I'm jealous....
Ok I need to look into this macro lens thing I guess...

Hell, if I can dig out my dead NF7-S, I'll have a looksie for you, see what I can find under that northbridge. :D

dont cut open your nf2 boards unless they are dead already! lol, nf2 nbs are built the same way as the gpus! there was a guy posting a pic on how he took off the ihs of his nb on his dead nf7-s i think, thats how i got the idear to check if the ihs can be removed without actually damaging the core.
and i think its indeed possible, but it will take a LONG time off lapping and as soon as you lapped through the copper plate in the middle of the nb or gpu you should stop lapping! just try to lap a little more to get the edges plain! around 0.1mm deeper and you will hit the gpu/nb and probably kill it.
is there a way to dissolve the ceramic without damging the core and the fine copper connections going to the core? some acid maybe?
that would be the only way to totally remove the cermaique and direct die cool the nb/gpu.
and yes, first the gpu was totally black like the c1 nbs of the nf2 chipset, if you lapp a while you reach the metal plate you all know from the a1 a2 and a3 nbs of the nf2 chipset.

Your sig is sick saaya.. :D
You can lap the core slightly, I did it to my T-Bird 1.2c when it was still alive... just be carefull!

I wonder whats under the ceramic of my GF1, GF2, and Ti4400.... hmm.... :D
saaya
02-05-2004, 12:08 PM
probably the same thing... i opened the nb and sb of an old ibx440 board and the gpu of a ati rage 2000 pro and they all had a copper plate under the ceramic and under it some more ceramic and finally the core/chipset.
thx, sig is a joke teus sent me :D
so will taking the IHS off the8500 help the oc?
I seem to have probs with cooling mine, even when I dont oc it that much. The card locks, and then the drivers reset it. and only when its hot in my room.
Any body know where to measure Vddq on the 8500?
