View Full Version : I Did It! I have Broken 23k with Air Cooling!

Blind_GI

It felt just like yesturday when I broke 22k (like 5 days ago lol), but now I have finally concurred 23k! 3DMark01 - 23125 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7451075). This was done with NO VMods at all, and all air cooling! I have the Swiftech MCX478-V on my 2.8c, MCX159 on my NB, and a VGA Silencer on my 9800 Pro. For my 23k score this is what I had my comp set to:

2.8c: 3.71GHz @ 265 FSB @ 5:4 @ 1.6 VCore |
Corsair XMS PC-3500: 2-2-2-5 @ 212 FSB @ 2.8 VDimm |
9800 Pro: 488/387 (No Volt Mods Yet) |
Swiftech MCX478-V : Swiftech MCX159-P : Arctic VGA Silencer |

I was pretty shocked that I actually hit the 23k mark without doing any kind of mods or anything, but there is one thing I did change of course. This time I put my PC on my window sill sucking in freezing cold 10f air ;). I managed to grab a screenshot of my temps (after running 01 though, so my temps were actually 6c - CPU, -4c System) and my 3.8GHz OC :D

http://www.photobucket.com/albums/1003/And1drew413/My_Best_Temps_and_3.jpg

I would have run the Bench at 3.8GHz but I ran out of time (my mom got kind of mad the window was open and such). But I was able to boot up into windows and take the screenshot at 1.6 Volts at 272FSB (3.81GHz), so im sure if I threw 1.7Volts at it I could have ran 01 with no problems ;)

Ok well here is my compare one more time, my first 23k Score on a P4 "c" with air cooling: 3DMark01 - 23125 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7451075) :D

Now let me VMod my 9800 Pro and go for 24k on Air!

that's pretty nice, i like the video card clocks, not bad without v-mods.

i have 24k on air, but i'm on an A64. regular room temps. link in sig.

Blind_GI
01-15-2004, 06:43 PM
Thanks Orian and lmao @ skate ;)

Hmm Orian your score seems a bit low... actually it seems very low for ur specs. You should have hit 23.5k or possibly 24k with that setup... send that 2.4c over to me and i'll show ya what im talking about ;)

Edit: Nice score eshbach, those A64's are definitely killer performers :) I got 22367 with my room temp at 60f (no windows or anything open and heat on), but that cold air definitley gave me the boost I needed (I could have done better though, at least 400 points better if I had the time).

Orian
01-15-2004, 09:27 PM
Yeah I cannot go above 284FSB @ 5:4 for some reason, it is so annoying. I can do up to 309FSB @ 3:2, and 240FSB @ 1:1. This is 3.225vdimm BTW. I'm also running dx9, omega 3.9 drivers, and Win2k3 Server. Any suggestions?

Blind_GI
01-15-2004, 09:35 PM
I would try Win XP Pro, DX 8.1 (it comes with XP), and Cat 3.2's. If you have a spare HDD or don't mind testing out the above setup then I would try it out. That and a clean install gave me a few needed points ;)

Yea I just saw it was at 3:2 instead of 5:4, so I guess your score is not to low after all :)

Alos here is a few tips you might or might not no:

Close All Applications: Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task manager -> Right click (Programs Listed) -> End Process -> Yes

Run 3DMark in Realtime: Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task manager -> Right click 3DMark2001se -> Set Priority -> Realtime

Run 3DMark Without Explorer Running: Open 3d Mark..... Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task Manager -> Click Explorer -> End Process -> Yes

To Restart Explorer: Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task Manager -> File -> New Task (Run) -> Type: Explorer -> Click Ok/Press Return

Run 3DMark In This Order:

Car High
Lobby High
Nature
Drag High
Drag Low
Lobby Low
Car Low

(Repeat If Abnormally Low)

Car Low = CPU MHz
Car High = FSB & Ram timings
Dragothic Low = VGA MHz
Dragothic High = Ram timings & VGA MHz
Lobby Low = CPU MHz
Lobby High = FSB, CPU MHz & Ram timings
Nature = VGA MHz & Ram timings

Thats a few things I have picked up along the way concerning 3DMark01 [face_cool]. Hope that helps some :D

Also did you Tweak Win2k3 yet? And if you get XP I have a few good tweak sites concerning the tweaking of XP Pro.

Nice going, bro.:)

I wanna try to get 23k, but I think with a 9700Pro it won't be possible.:( Maybe, I'll take this thing out to the garage and take advantage of -5F tomorrow. :D

A few things to add...

I always run Drago Low first because I get the biggest boost there...but it may be different on your system, I run Nvidia...I get about +10fps, or 100 points doing that...I don't think I could pick up 100 points from any other test.

From my experience, what makes the points in each test...

CPU/RAM and VGA, in that order

Car Low = 85/15
Car High = 95/5
Dragothic Low = 50/50
Dragothic High = 25/75
Lobby Low = 95/5
Lobby High = 90/10
Nature = 5/95

Also I run Car Low 2nd just for convenience...since you have to run it many times just to get a good one (damn random crap), I don't want to have a great run in all the other tests just for it all to be a waste because Car Low sucked...

Blind,

What kind of temps do you normally get out of the 478 on 60 degree room air?

Thanks for the tips a never knew the "correct" order to run the tests. I tweaked 2k3 about as much as you can. I just wish I could do 305FSB at 5:4.

Blind_GI
01-16-2004, 11:04 AM
:D np's.

And I actually started to run Car Low first, and I get my biggest boost from that now. Then I run Car High and get about the same as if I ran Car High first, but my Car low is about 15 FPS better! I will try running Drag low first, maybe I can get a bigger boost from that isntead of Car low (who knows).

Blind,

What kind of temps do you normally get out of the 478 on 60 degree room air?

On 60f room temp I usually get 31c temps Idle and 45 load (my load temps are going down everytime I run Prime, gotta love Burning in a new Thermal Paste ;)). And when its 50f I usually get around 28c (it still has a few more days to go before its completley burnt in).

I think I can get better temps if I just replace my current case fans. All my 5 case fans are stock (aside from two which are about the same RPM/CFM). All I need is some 36CFM case fans and I think I can pull off 2c lower temps with ease.

Strange. I benched 2k1 and 2k3 within minutes of each other yet with 2K1 my 9800 Pro is 2.14% off your XT. However, with 2K3, the gap is almost 12%. I must not know the secret handshake for running 2K3 benches.

The best I have gotten with my 3.0c was at 3450Mhz, 1:1, 2-3-2-6. I forget what I had the card at maybe like 410/365 not sure though and I scored a 20689. I didnt upload it to the web site. I still need to setup the whole thing for uploading, but the machine isnt 100% stable at that speed due to the vdimm issue. =\

Click on 'selected tests' then 'custom'!

Ive took some good info from this thread to try and make my scores better.

This is my score everything @ stock 12486 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7436714)

I overclocked the card abit and this is what I got 13141 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7441362)

Thats the highest score ive got which I could publish. I got 13559 but I couldnt publish the score due to cpu varition or somthing like that!

I cant overclock the 2500+ barton much. The first day I got I ran at 200x11 and booted now it will not run 190x11 in 3d mark 01! So I am left to runing 3D mark 01 with stock speeds! :(

Anyone got any ideas of how I can improve! Anyomre tweaks on XP?

That's a good 9800 Pro you have (to original poster). I wish mine could clock that high, I would have got 24K already: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7457395 23442 (with A64), all aircooled and no mods. Shuttle AN50R is being stupid and won't run 1:1 above 205MHz...

lookin quite good. I also appreciate some of the tips you layed down. Not sure why I never figured out to run high before low. Guess I never put much thought to vga overclocking till recently.

BTW what about those xp tweaks you mentioned. My install is tweaked pretty good, but I wouldn't mind some I haven't tried!

Just waitin to get my 9800pro back from RMA. hopefully they send a new one as the other one was a dog. Could only get 20.7K (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7410252) at 3.56ghz. That is without running the tests in a good order.
