9700np better than 9600xt?

basically what the title says is a 9700non pro better than a 9600xt?
i would be OC both so the 9700np probably to pro speeds or further if i can get that and 9600xt to what ever it goes to?

so what do u think?

I like the eight pipe cards. ATi wants you to buy a 9600 because it's cheaper on them hence there dissapearance from the market instead of going cheap.

It took the XT model of the 9600's to finally challenge the 9500 pro. So I would say 9700np definitely. Even if the 9600 OC like a bat out of hell the 9700np should do alright and with twice the pipes the 9700np will probably easily retain it's fill rate advantage... Memory bus width double too. No brainer for me.

I hate to burst your bubble, but a 9600XT will stay even and even surpass a 9700np in some games. We're compairing a non pro to a XT. Now if you overclock the np to a decent level, then it'll kill the 9600XT.

Anyhow, I hate to use his site for a comparison, but Toms Hardware has benchmarks up comparing several cards. There's no 9700np there, but there is a 9700 and 9800SE (Don't know about the 9800se, but I do know that SE normally stands for "§§§§ty Edition"). Unless it's been cut down to 4 pipelines, wouldn't the 9800se be equivalent to a 9700np?

get the 9700np. I've been using the 9600xt's in customers rigs. yeah it clock though the roof. and only around $150 but the 9700 is better.

Dude, the 9800 SE of slow! Just like the 9600 SE is as fast as my ti4200.

Back on topic, the 9700 np would be your better bet. You can also flash the bios and get it up to pro speeds and performance.

i have a 9700np and i've been comparing the 9600xt to what i get...

the 9600xt might be faster @ 800x600

however i play @ 1024x768 with 6x AA and 8X AF so i get like = 50~80fps

the 9600xt would get like 20-50fps

in other words: with all the eyecandy on the 9700 crushes the 9600xt

the 9600xt does not come close, it's common for hte 9700 to get double the 9600xt

a non pro compared to a XT, and what are you trying to say?

At stock speeds the 9700np would beat the 9600XT, obviously a 9600XT overclocked would beat a 9700np in some games but with them both overclocked then the 9700np comes out the winner.

Also with the 9700np it can be flashed to a 9700pro and that would be alot better than a 9600XT!

i have been doing a little research and it seem that a 9800se aiw can be softmodded to a 9800pro aiw
it looks like the hurcules version tends to mod better without any problems because it has the same layout as a 9800pro but only cut down to 4 pipelines,
so does any 1 have a modded 9800se aiw or know any1 who has tried it?
and if i get 1 and it doesnt work what kind of performance would i bee looking at if i got that card?
compared to a 9600pro but if the mod was unsuccessfull i would still OC the card so would i be able to reach 9600pro speed or above if the mod went wrong?

yes hercules 9800se aiw can soft moded to 9800pro easily

Higher frequency attempts to make up for pipe deficit... but what's there answer to a 256 bit memory bus? There is none. The best video card around is still very much based on this R300 architecture. True 8 pipes and 256 bit bus is what got ATi where they are at in the performance wars and has been the most potent solution.

Never buy an SE as well. Those are 4pipes without the high frequency. The np's are generally the best buys I think. Best enthusiast card to get right now would probably be a 9800np, if you could find one;) I hope to get an np of there next generation after prices settle. The trend has been for them to be worth the extra scratch over the value line.

well u see i am looking on ebay for the cards and 9800pro's are £200 new and the np are £190 roughly

but that is not including shipping which is another £10 so overall i can not afford to get a np or pro
from the shops np are £200 and pros are £260 roughly again

so that is why i am thinking about the 9800se aiw because if successful i will have a 9800pro aiw or even(doesnt happen very much) 9800xt speeds
