View Full Version : Something for the ladies of the forum
For my English Literature AS Level Work (further education) I am studying a set of poems by Carol Ann Duffy. She is a lesbian writer, who is very feminist and you may like her work. Her latets book, The World's Wife, is the collection of poems that I am studying.
The book is about the wives of many famous people, even if they weren't married she has written poems about what their wife's would say about them. Some of the poems are just about particular women. Some are just a womens perspective of certain men. People mentioned are Mira Hindley, The Kray Sister's, Freud, Aesop and Hathaway.
The book will cost you £7.99 but its an interesting read looking at the lives of people from the womans point of view.
Heres an extract:
Mrs Aesop by Carol Ann Duffy from The World's Wife
By Christ, he could bore for purgatory. He was small,
didn't prepossess. So he tried to impress. Dead men,
Mrs Aesop, he'd say, tell no tales. Well, let me tell you now
that the bord in his hand shat on his sleeve,
never mind the two worth less in the brush. Tedious.
Going out with worst. He'd stand at our gate, look, then leap;
scour the hedgerows for a shy mouse, the fields
for a sly fox, the sky for one particular swallow
that couldn't make a summer. The jackdaw, according to
him,
envied the eagle. Donkeys would, on the whole, prefer to be
lions.
On one appauling evening stroll, we passed an old hare
snoozing in a ditch - he stopped and made a note -
and then, about a mile further on, a tortoise, somebody's pet,
creeping, slow as marriage, up the road. Slow
but certain, Mrs Aesop, wins the race. §§§§§§§.
What race? What sour grapes? What silk purse,
sow's ear, dog in a manger, what big fish? Some days
I could barely keep awake as the story droned on
towards the moral of itself. Action, Mrs A.,speaks louder
than words. And that's another thing, the sex
was diabolical. I gave him a fable one night
about a little :banana::banana::banana::banana: that wouldn't crow, a razor-sharp axe
with a heart blacker than the pot that called the kettle.
I'll cut off your tail, all right, I said, to save my face.
That shut him up. I laughed last, longest.
So Jen, Lady Germ, Geek Goddess and Grace enjoy!
Heres a good tip, never hand in your homework a week early, as I've now been given extra.

lesbian books, does it come with pictures? :slobber:
If I told you it was full of erotic pictures of Duffy and her many girlfriends would you buy it?
It is not a lesbian book, she however is a lesbian and it only has one picture of her face on the back.

Eddy,
I was deeply saddened to read this post in a forum that has done everything in its power to encourage Computer and Overclocking hobbiests from all over the world, REGARDLESS of Gender, Age, Ethnicity, Religion, or Political Beliefs to come together to discuss and share their experiences, frustrations, goals, and hurdles they have overcome. This is a place where those things dont matter, and are not permitted to matter. Your statement shows that you did not read CCW's original post, let alone understood it fully, but that you assumed something that was not there. You rushed to make your reply, which comes off not only as simply a desire to increase your post count, but also as a flame to CCW and the femal members of this wonderful forum. It is an offront to what the moderators and members of XtremeSystems have built here. A virtual slap in the face. Your comments were uncalled for and unnecessary. You have shown yourself for the level of evolution and education you have achieved.

I'm sure glad the majority of the world I live in don't share your view. And yes eddy I'm a man. All grown up and secure in my manhood . I don't feel a need to be "needed" by any woman. In fact I prefer not to be needed. And honestly who really care what a woman thinks she looks like. I personally prefer the woman in my life to be inteligent over all else. Over time as you grow up you may realize this or you may just grow old and lonely.

No apology needed, it was not your fault by any means.
Let's get it straight - Ms. Clinton is no feminist, though she may appeal to some.
She's a politician, a powerful politician. If feminism aids her in her career goals then she'll support it. If not, well, she *is* capable of doing what is necessary to get from here to there (the White House) with or without feminists.
actually she's regarded by most politicians to be a feminist...
Most political analysts, or most politicians? Hah - she is for whatever aids her in her goals.
A true feminist has the goal of equality of all humans and in particular, women.
Ms. Clinton has the goal of political power. She wants the ultimate preferential distinction of being the President. What that has to do with feminism is dubious.
WE DON'T CARE!!!:off: :off: :off: :explode: :explode:
I hate politics more than most things.
I apologize to the people who I offended.
You have shown yourself for the level of evolution and education you have achieved. I never gave an explanation for my opinion, so you do not know what I know about the subject. If I did, maybe you might agree with me on some things... You're questioning my intelligence (rule#7) and that offends me.
......and yes, more feminism may mean that men are needed less. Why should we NEED you? Make us WANT you. you're 100% correct on that.

I'll answer that.
1. He doesn't question your intellect. When you show it yourself and he said just that, he doesn't have to!
2. I know I'm correct on that, however it is the exact opposite of what you said. Hence either you didn't understand what you said (which gets us back to number 1) or you are just trying to 'cover your tracks'.
3. Drawing attention of the females for a topic that might concern them versus insulting them because they are females are 2 entirely different things. Which if you can't understand why or how, it gets us back to number 1 again.
If you want a debate or even a fight over something, make it worth it at least....

They don't offend me, but 99% of the political conversations end to fights, small or large. Fights do offend me. JK was just trying to use sarcastic humor to brake the ice, I don't believe he stated his political belief through it. You don't have to take everything so serious, you know that JK responds through sarcasm usually.

"I know I'm correct on that, however it is the exact opposite of what you said" - no it's not the exact opposite.
"more feminism may mean that men are needed less" <- what you said
"Also, more feminism means that men are needed less." <- what i said.
"You have shown yourself for the level of evolution and education you have achieved" - that is what GeekGoddess said. To me, she is saying that I know absolutely nothing about the subject. She's questioning my intelligence, even though I NEVER gave any explanation to back up my opinion. That's being prejudice.
Drawing attention of the females for a topic that might concern them versus insulting them because they are females are 2 entirely different things. - How would you or anyone else feel IF a male was offended/insulted by a thread started "for the men of the forum" for the sole purpose of posting pictures of half naked women.

Being "needed" and being "wanted" are two different things. In this day and age, Many people, of both genders, do not "need" the other for survival, unlike in the past when it was a necessity to pair up with another person. Each gender brought their own skills and viewpoints into the equation which would increase the chances of a longer, better life. Therefore, due to the technological advances of mankind, we no longer "need" to pair up in order to simply survive. We "Want" to pair up because we are still basically social animals and enjoy each others company.
"You have shown yourself for the level of evolution and education you have achieved" - that is what GeekGoddess said. To me, she is saying that I know absolutely nothing about the subject. She's questioning my intelligence, even though I NEVER gave any explanation to back up my opinion. That's being prejudice. [/B]
Where in that statement do I say the word "Intelligence"? I used the words "evolution and education". I know tons of people who have a low education, but a super high intelligence, and vice versa. There are also many many areas in which a person can "evolve" and be "educated" in which a person's IQ has nothing to do with. Your statement/opinion on the subject of feminism being nothing more than an ugly woman thinking that shes as attractive as a truly attractive woman..well, that just shows your level of education on the subject of feminism, as well as your evolution in your thinking towards women in general.
Nowhere did I question your intelligence. Your statement was prejudicial to women and feminsim in general, therefore violates rule #7. My statement was not, and does not. You still have yet to offer an explanation of your opinion, which, as you expressed it, has no place on this thread, let alone this forum. To be honest, I really dont want to hear an explanation of your opinion, its your right to believe what you want. Your statement was inflammitory and carelessly worded. Face it Eddy, you stepped on it. Stop trying to turn it around and make me the bad guy here (or should I say "evil feminist :banana::banana::banana::banana:?;)) and you the victim. It just isnt gonna fly. You might want to call a Podiatrist and ask him to remove the foot which you have firmly stuck in your mouth in regards to this subject.

I wanted to add something that they could relate to as the threads here are predominantly orientated towards the male gender. I thoight they might like the idea of this book. It looks at people from the perspective of women, you might say I am promoting the book, and rightly so. I have enjoyed reading the poems in it, because I like to look at things from different persectives. if you can see something from another point of view, that is unbiased, you understand it better.
eddy, I think that by you asking "why is this post for the ladies of the forum" you have realised that you are wrong, but you don't want to be totally wrong so you are going off the point to try and make a problem out of something else.

As a fan of Aesop, can you spot all the references to his fables? I think the way she has wrote this poem is clever.
Craig
TheDude, I did already. No one noticed.
CCW, no it's my fault and no I didn't realize that I was wrong. Without citing examples, I can back up my first reply in one sentence...Feminism should not be promoted because it makes women look like they can't succeed on their own.
Want an example? Martha Burke trying to get a female forced into playing at a male-only PRIVATE golf course.
more feminism means that men are needed less. - And wanted less too...Martha Burke wants most men castrated because they aren't good enough for women. I'm sure if you asked her, she'd be all for a woman going to a sperm bank and getting pregnant unnaturally. In other words, keep a few men and get rid of the rest. Good idea?
feminism makes an unatractive woman think she looks like any other good looking woman. Go shopping with a woman. Actually, go shopping with a woman who is very thin. Or even ask her about the clothes she buys and if they fit. She'll tell you that most of the extra small clothes are too big for her. Why? Because the die-hard feminists got the sizes changed. So maybe an extra large size shirt was changed to a medium sized shirt. Same dimensions, just something different on the tag that makes women think they aren't as big as they really are, and to make them think they are good looking. **women's clothes size is only an example and is not meant to hurt anyone's feeling**

...keeping a few (not) men and get rid of the rest. Yes, it's a nice idea! You are in the 'good riddance' list, that's why you worry.:p:
Now, you are quoting a single person to express the whole theory of feminism. Above all, all those that you said have nothing to do with your initial responce to the first person that you quoted. Which all of the above paragraphs STILL gets us back to No.1 that I mentioned in my previous reply.

Grace....it's most often the case that a gentleman will feel responsibile for apologizing for less mannered men....simply because less mannered men are not capable of it even when they "try". Hardass and CCW are sincere and somehow feel responsible even though they are not of course.
At least you probably do not find yourself in the position of feeling like you should apologise for your entire gender very often.

I did explain my first post.
"please don't promote feminism." - and like I said...feminism makes it look like women have to be aided in succeeding at things. Feminists HATE when a woman succeeds on her own. Do you find anything wrong with that?
Actually, what do you think feminism is anyway?
Now, you are quoting a single person to express the whole theory of feminism. - Martha Burk is the chair-woman of the National Organization Of Women (http://www.now.org). That is the largest feminist group in the country, or even the world.

You can't deny responsibility of creating the thread, I agree. That doesn't mean that you have to take responsibility of each $%^$%& post in it. You can't control other people's minds you know. And of course as you said you expected sarcastic and similar answers, like some that came from JK, however sarcasm and direct insult walk on different paths. Want to know whats going to happen to the part of the UK we live in due to global warming? It'll be submerged under water i nthe end. Our climate will become warmer and we will be able to have vineyards in the UK to make our own wine. basically, England will have the same climate that France has and we will slowly move away from the temperate maritime climate we have now.
Get ready to pull your trousers up and be stepping in buckets full of grapes all day.
ive had a hell of a lot of colder days though. the su nis out now but everything is iced over and all the roads were gritted friday night. The ydont grit the roads unless te yare expecting some really cold nights, they dont want to waste money.
Anyway, Im still waiting for them to hand Ian Huntley, the bed clothes that harold Shipman hung himself with. As its our tax thats paying to keep him alive.

Thanks Bowman, Its nice to see you post in an area I dont see you much in. It gives those of us who arent heavy into the phase change arena (...yet ;)) a chance to visit w/ ya a tad bit. BTW, hows the new evap coming? Its awesome! Congrats again on it! :D
I too would like to see more females on the forum. One thing I've noticed through cruisin' through others boards well. is that there arent that many of us around. When it comes to the more technical and tweaking side of puters, sad to say, its still very much an "old boys' club", soto speak, & I find it annoying when I go into a shop and have the guys in there talk down to me like Im an puter idiot. I personally have a real blast getting in there and doing it, its a challenge to do things I havnt done yet. :)
It was a wonderful thing when Jamal introduced me to XtremeSystems, a place where I could go and learn and be totally accepted. This place has encouraged me to do things I never would have done before or even thought I could. I've stated this before in another thread, but I'll say it again here. Very much thanks to all y'all, mods and members alike, for everything! XtremeSystems feels like a home for me now, and you guys like family. Even though I dont post in a lot of the threads, it doesnt mean I'm not in there reading! ;) :)

yea i try to get around.:D
the main thing i think women have problems with coming into a large forum like this is ......well to be honest..most of the guys in here dont have girlfriends of their own..just computer geeks...i mean i hate to just come out and say that...but i think thats about it...
so when they think they see a woman on the forum ...and she is ansering or posting....they jump all over her ...and that makes alot of women get tried of posting....because it isnt worth the effort to listen to some guy trying to hit on her,or just agravate her ....
i know ther are lots of good guys in here...that are not geeks...
a few of us are older...and have families..and i personally think it is nice to have a womans opinion on stuff...another view is always a nice thing.
so you girls will always have my support.and if needed just ask me for help...i was overclocking long before i was freon cooling stuff. and i can aways be reached by pm if needed...to handle any problems that may arise.

Well, I really havent had much of a problem w/ guys hitting on me in here (mostly happens when I'm in a chat room, which is rarely), and havent had many guys trying to aggravate me either. :) I really dont think Eddy realized how bad he stepped on it earlier,,perhaps he thought he'd have a bit more support than he did,,,lol. One of the reasons that I have felt more comfortable on this forum is because several of the members aren't kids, have families and life experience. It's a good peer group. I really like the mentoring attitudes that go on here,,,the more experienced taking the less experienced under their wing (soto speak) and guiding them along and helping them out, regardless of age. Too bad this doesnt extend into more areas of our society anymore. Hopefully, what some of the youngers members do take away from here includes not only technical geek knowledge, but also tolerance and a more open-minded attitude towards others in general.
I know,,,wordy wordy wordy,,,,and sentimental.....but whatta ya expect....after all,,,,I AM a girl!!! ;);) LMAO

and dito to everything geekgoddess said about this place, it feels like a virtual home.
Well very true...i know alot of great people from this forum..and some are geeks.....which sometimes is a great thing....
to be honest most people outside of the computer fourms consider ALL OF US GEEKS...lol,,:toast:
but if we treat each other with respect..it will make no differance male or female or anything else...respect between people means alot...if you respect everyone elses opinions you wont have many people upset with you anyways...;)

This has been a good thread in my opinion, I'm writing an article now for college entitled "Gender in Language and Society" that I may post on here as well. I've also wrote my own Duffy style poem, from the point of view of Aristotles wife about Aristotle.

My views on the way women are talked to and about in the modern world.
Oscar Wilde’s Wife:
He is happy with me
Because he doesn’t love me
My often-convincing arguments
Are to be avoided vulgarly
But he too old to
know everything now
Only the young and arrogant
can perceive the world
but he is not poor
my love lingers on him
I will be his last
Romance, and I, his first love
Why strip the outside?
When the inside is of importance
It is what he is
And he can only harm himself
The love he denies
Me, cannot hurt
He is only happy
Content
Aristotles Wife:
He would hide behind his calculative mind
pity the fool in other men
with his wisdom, divine
All men are mortal, he is a man, therefore he is mortal
animals of the world have desires
humans can control desire with reason
what of the animals in humans?
not for the illiberal women he would say
his boorish attitude towards
the brains in women, irrational
for someone concered with logistics
he should at least know, we are the
same. His mind of Deficiency? Mean? Excess?
Cowardice? Courage? Rashness?
Illiberility? Liberality? Prodigality?
more than needed from Plato
excess or deficiency of gymnastic exercise is fatal to strength
to much, to little - virtuous mean shines through
but only art can express a true idea
the realisation of an external form
and so he continues
rationality defeating the point of an argument
logic overclouding judgement
intellectual capacity is his only mistress
Confucius Wife:
He cannot see my beauty
It is a mistake
He has made to a crime
Ashamed, swallowed by his self-pity
He has left me
In the darkness
No moon, and no stars
Truly ignorant
I look to our future
But I have no past to relate to
Our relation ship draws on
Slowly
Yet to
stop
The above are my own work in based on Duffy's style of writing, they are from the womans point of view of the man in question.

Not a dumb question at all, the poems that I have done are written in the same style that Duffy writes her poems in. I done these as extra work, we haven't been asked to write our own at all in her style (yet) however I wanted to get a better feel of the style of her poems to aid me with my work. Its just the womens point of view about these men even if the man in question was never married or was homosexual (as I think you'll find one of those mentioned above is.)
Thanks for your praise, its appreciated! :
edit - lol, we posted near enough at the same time, thanks for the praise GeekGoddess

Why all three of those have a 'my bad husband' tone, at least to me?
It appears like they tell only the flaws. They even turn most of their strong attributes into flaws. No person can have only flaws. No woman can see only flaws (I think or *want to* hope).
...actually, no woman blames (or should anyway) her husband in public about anything.
Edit : And why I actually complain about it???It's just a poem!
Well from looking over the book, The Worlds Wife, a collection of poem by Carol Ann Duffy all of her work is from this book is written in that style. I was just writing poems about other famous people in her style.
The poem based on Oscar Wilde is taking a look at some of his famous quotes, and Ive adapted them to how they would fit a women.

about the poems i think grace is right why are they so negative?, although i don think husband blaming is wrong, it is absolutely right if the husband deserves to be blamed, but it is not a very good think to speak in name of death/non existent wifes of dead people (there is no way to know how they would think/feel) plus it is worse if the things said are negative, i mean i wouldnt like it if in a future someone writes a poem like that about my theoretical wife.
