Hi fellas,
Just finished this ramsink job on a R9700Pro:

Now I need a nice HS/F for the VPU. There's enough room for S370-sized heatsinks. Question: how to secure a relatively heavy HS to the card? Is AS-Adh strong enough to do the job?
- I constructed a nice gfx-card cooler with some M5 threadwire, a torch and 2 Sunon 12cm fans, 166 CFM's in total. :D

I don't wanna throw it in the watercooling loop, as I'm building a chiller. Insulation would become a horrible endevour. :slobber:

Just drill some holes in whatever heatsink you want to use so they line up with the mounting holes. Heres a good guide. http://sid.nrgservers.net/9700mod/

I have seen pics of this (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/minochcokit.html) HSF on the 9700pro without mods. I can't find them now, but I'll get this for mine ;)

I just got one of these for review from SVC.com....seems to work pretty well...has 2 speed fan and vents out the rear of case. It's on my XT9800.

I once drilled holes in a heatsink, it was a GlobalWin CAK-II 68 which was mounted on a Ti4600. I have to say; drilling and treading copper on M2 scale was a pain in the -you-know-what-! By the time I got it right, the whole base of the heatsink was full of messed-up holes :p:
Looked like this:

(and yeah, that's tiny fans on them ramsinks)
If I go at it again I wanna make sure to use an ALU heatsink, or use AS/Adh. Who votes for what?

I've heard very good things about those. I'm going to get one for my 9700pro once the copper version is out.

Think I found something...
Searching around in my old-pc-stuffs-rubbish-bin I found this Alu HS/F. I actually have no clue anymore what CPU range it was made for, but judging it's dimensions I think S370.

Still have to clean it and find a proper fan. Would it be any good for my R9700Pro? What do you guys think? Or should I get something more hefty like Alpha 6035 (on sale @ local shop)

TheDude,
I've seen those Arctic Cooling thingies being sold out here also. I'm getting more and more interested in them. One issue though; from the pics I've seen so far I'm affraid it's gonna interfere with the ramsinks. What do you thing? My ramsinks stand 8mm tall. Check pic in opening post...

It's hard to say as I really don't know metric. Here's a pic from another angle that may show clearance better. There are some rather tall caps that it misses.

8mm = 0.32". Including them tBGA chips it'll be around 0.4". But looking at your pic I reackon them ramsinks won't be a problem. Here's a pic of my R9700 from the side...

I think you will have enough clearance for the ramsinks....it looks to be close to 3/4 of an inch. ;)

Yes you will be fine, I played with a VGA silencer when they first came out, and it had enough clearence for my 12.5mm high ramsinks. Since yours are .04" thats roughly 11.5mm
If you have trouble getting a VGA Silencer where you live, www.Jab-Tech.com ships Overseas reasonably.

Silversink,
What was your over all general impression of the "Silencer". I won't be able to take any meaningful temps for a while.
Thanks :D

That won't be much of an issue. There're being sold locally at around €28 ($35). And oh yeah, as TheDude, I'd also like to know a thing or two about performance...

I'm actually running one right now on XT9800 in a MachII...but waiting on my thermocouples for my Omega Thermometer to come in. I like the 2 speed fan and the fact that it exhausts the hot air outside the case rather than inside as most do. ;)

All I did for my 9700 Pro when I still had it was to remove the shim and grease it properly. I had some old Thermaltake Ram heatsinks (for DIMMs) lying around, so I hacked them into pieces with my Dremel and used two sided tape to stick'em on the RAM chips on the 9700 Pro.
I only got a small increase in overclockability, but it gave me something to do.:)
