View Full Version : Dumb fan wiring question

Okay, this will sound stupid, but...

I got a couple of the 120mm Evercool aluminum fans for my external enclosure. As the fans are currently assembled, they blow into the enclosure -- instead of out -- when mounted as desired. (That is, I want the big aluminum housings on the outside of the enclosure for eye-candy value, but the mounting holes in the fan housing are oriented such that the fan blows inward, instead of outward, when it's mounted thus.)

Is there a way to change the wiring on this devil so that it blows in the other direction? I tried swapping the red and black wires in the plug, but it wouldn't spin at all like that.

I also tried to reverse the fan body in the housing, but the housing is machined to accept the fan body in only one orientation. So, it's either reverse the fan spin or have the fans push through the rad instead of pull.

Help, please?

i have a fan just like that, and i was thoroughly disappointed with the white structure too.. it looks horrible. I also looked into reversing the direction of the spin, but if you look at the blades, the way theyre shaped, they wont work going backwards. If you really want to reverse the spin, I think you have to reverse the yellow and black wires, since the yellow is 12v, at least on standard molex, but i do recall the 3 pin fans possibly changing that. Either way, the reversing will hurt cooling quite a bit, even though it will look cooler.

sKiTz0,

Thanks for the info! D@MN! Do you think I should just leave things alone and have the air pushing through the rad instead of pulling? I'd read that pulling was more efficient, but would it make that big a difference?

The only other thing I could do would be to go buy some different fans and use these for something else. :dammit:

I would extremely advise against rewiring the fan to spin in reverse. that is a good fan and it has been engineered in such a way to maximise airflow when spining the correct way. if reversed, you will be contradicting the structural properties that make that fan a good fan (such as the contours of the fan blades mentioned in the previous post). when reversed you may loss as much as 20 to 30 percent airflow! even more at higher RPM's! plus the motor will me turning the oppisite way it was engineered to turn, which will not kill the motor, but it is not good for it. i would take a little more time and try to figure out a way to mount it in such a way u want airflow with keeping the fan spinning the right way, maybe drill and thread holes on the side oppisite of the original mounting side.

post some pics under this thread of the your setup if possible, i would be able to give you more advise if i saw it first hand.

i will check this thread again later to see if more of my 2 cents is wanted.

i'm confident there is a better solution to your problem than just reversing the spin. ;)

Rooster, any help is appreciated! :D Unfortunately, I can't post any pix right now.

I've looked at this thing from every possible angle, and the only thing I can figure out is to mount the fans so that they push air into the enclosure, which then exits through the rad. That way, I can have the silver part of the fan body showing, rather than the white assembly at the rear of the fan. I figure that if I do a good job sealing the top of the enclosure and the joint between the rad and the enclosure, it should work okay.

The next time somebody has good 120's on sale, I'll have to pick up a couple and use these fans for something else, I guess.

If you have any other ideas, please let me know.
