(Obviously) Inspired by the pork rinds post.
Is it just me, or is beef jerky (either original, peppered, or sweet & hot) the best food ever?

I live in a cave and i dont know what beef jerky is. Ive seen it on the simpsons and HEARD of it but hav no idea what it actually is (apart from the beef part:rolleyes: )
Can u tell me, or are you gonna make me wait so the "i dont know i live in a cave" option is still valid on your poll?
If its the best food ever ive got to go and try and find it in the shops. I wana try sum

It's basically dried & seasoned beef (AFAIK, the best part of the cow there is). Get Original or Sweet & Hot to start you off (DON'T get Teriyaki - yuck!).

absolutly LOVE the Peppered, but I dont like it the way theyve been making it the last couple years,,,all moist and soft. Gimme the fully dry stuff....I like ripping off a hunk and savoring the flavor for awhile. :D YUM!

Nah the best is from the Farmers market where i live. The Amish people have a meat market there, it's nothing like this stuff you get in the bags or stores.
There isnt any chomping this stuff down. Any more than 3 pieces and your jaw is sore and you'll start to get a heatache. And the salt will eat the lining out of your mouth!!
But i cant resisit it.

Yeah, but it's usually Hickory Smoked or Teriyaki. :( If I find Peppered there, I ALWAYS get it. :D

I make my own, get a nice tenderloin then let it season in spices for a few days then into a small dehydrator. The stuff melts in your mouth and I know the beef stock used was the best.

I once went to a ConAgra Slim Jim factory and saw what they used as their fillers, I will never EVER eat a mass produced Beef Jerky product.
In Slim Jims FAQ (http://www.slimjim.com/) they mention that the ingredients are 'Secret ingredients'. This means they dont want you to know your eating Pig and Beef lips and other fun stuff. They do not list the ingredients openly on their website but use terms like 'mechanically seperated chicken parts', which means that after the choice peices are cut off like the breast, wings and leg meat,(Then the choice meat is sold by a different segment of ConAgra foods) a machine Strips the devoud of chicken meat you are accustom to eat, and strips the chicken carcass down to the bone and use all the By-Products.
My dog eats by-products, I refuse to.

My sister once had a job in a factory where they made TV dinners. After talking to her about it, I threw a half dozen TV dinners in the trash from my freezer and have not touched one since. If you knew what went on in a lot of places that fix your food, you would never eat out again.

LOL....just VERY unsanitary conditions. Food fights, people picking their nose and then handling the food, dropping it on the floor and picking it up and throwing it in the dinner, not washing their hands after going to the can...you get the picture.
She refused to eat them after working there and that was good enough for me.

I think Beef Jerky is an American thing, must be left over from the days of the Fur Traders, Pioneers heading out west, and much of the States were still Territories. It is basically thin strips of meat which are dried and preserved, traditionally smoked, and salted if you had it. It was travel food, and the Native Americans used it along with Pemmican, which are small cakes made from the dried meat, finely chopped or ground, mixed with berries and fat. This provided the high protein and necessary fat needed for basic survival. :) Hope this clears up some of the mystery of what it is. :D
Btw, Beef sticks like SlimJims dont count as Jerky! :p:

Schmax, not sure if you WANT to know this...Pork Rinds are strips of deep fried pig skin,,,,they puff up and get all crispy and light. Im not sure of the origin of them, but I have a feeling they came from the Southern part of the U.S......;)

True xDUCK, it was the only way to preserve the meat long enough to A)get it home from a hunt site a distance from the current residence site B) made it light enough to carry and easier to pack & store than large haunches of butchered animal or having the animal swinging from a pole or transom C) preserved the precious food item long enough so it could last months through the winter. The only major dif tween then and now is the preservation method. Before it was just smoked dried meat. Now its seasoned, and preserved not only with smoke, but with large amounts of salt. Glad to see you know a bit of the social sciences. :)
@Dude: Thanks,,,,Of course, I know about the jerky thing, and for some reason, Pork Rinds just SEEMED to be something that would come from the South......;) :D LOL

on topic, beef jerky owns. i hate getting cravings for it, as i can not relly afford it and all. i get no other flavor than terryaki.
agreed with someone elses comment about some of it being too moist and all. yeah i want dry hard stuff, then the saliva and moisture in the mouth can moisten it, i dont need others to moisten my jerky, DAMMIT! :D
they also make this stuff called jerky chew. its shreeded jerky and comes in a can like dipping tobacco would. heh, kinda funny/bizarre if u ask me, but hey...whatever sells right?

I'm a fan of beef jerky myself. Nothing beat the salted dry meats. But Teryiaki owns. My grandfather makes some badass stuff out of moose and caribou.

One thing I can say without a doubt is that at my store when I am working, that sort of thing does not happen. Friggin nasty.
I look at it like this, I know I would not want to go eat somewhere and have to worry about that. So in turn, I want it to be the same for others, expect it clean and sanitary.
Kicks JBell in the arse just for the comment! :slapass:
