Hi,

I just got a good deal on a new XP 3000 barton but I think Ive made a big mistake.
I have the lastest Bios form my mobo but Im not sure it will work in this board?
Earlier bios show up to XP 3000 but I think these are not Bartons? whilst the latest info on a more recent bios quotes upto xp 2500 barton.

Please can someone point me in the write direction before I proceed with installing the CPU, the selections in the current bios only show up to 2800 /333.

I was happy with this board too, but if I need to buy a new one can you please recommend which might be the best purchase for my new BArton which I would like to OC at some stage later.

thanks

I had to run,so I didn't say the following in my previous message: It might not recognize it due to the chipset, try it in another mobo...

I have not tried it in my own motherboard yet.. What I was trying to say that I dont want to strip it down just to find it will never work in my board (forgot to mention the CPU is new btw) surely there must be some info somewhere that says it will work in this board if there is I cannot find it.

The Abit NF7-S (V2.0) - nForce2 looks quite good actually so I might get that one tommorrow.

One more thing I have been looking at Coolers and fancy the Coolermaster Jet-7 AMD woudl I be ok with this ssytem and will it give me a certain amout of OC capability?

thanks

Does it show support for 2500's, or 2800's?

Those are bartons.

the Jet 7 is to be avoided... All show and no performance worth it's price. Not to mention ...it's loud.

Get ANY Thermalright SLK-XXX heatsink...and suitable 80 or 92mm fan.

I've got a Zalman CPNS6000cu + 100cfm 92mm in my system. Works great. Might wanna consider a Zalman 7000 though. Those are sweet.

Hi thanks for the advice.. might go for SLK as i read this review at http://www.digital-daily.com/cooling/zalman-7000/

and it says that tha above model is not suitable for AMD barton processors.

As for mobo support for barton if u can understand this from Abit http://www.abit-usa.com/downloads/bios/bios_revision.php?categories=1&model=1

it would help, its so confusing these days when they got XP3000 and XP 3000 barton are they the same thing or not?

The third one down says support for Barton's.

Hope it works.

Ok I have been looking at various reviews and found a good one here:- http://www.silentpcreview.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=132&page=4

But as ever I am still confused as to which is best, the review shows that the new SP97 gets a few deg more than the SLK900, however the Zalmans are even more impressive across the same range of voltages.

Its table 11 that confuses me most, are they saying that a Zalman will only work at 5v as this is the only comparison they are showing or do you have to mod your voltages somehow. Being such a noob I dont want to buy a Zalman to find I have another job on to get it to do 36 deg at 12v and having said that will my SP97 work at 12V anyway?

Its never simple is it

SP-97 doesn't work with voltage...unlike the Zalman the SP is heatsink only. It requires that you add a 80 or 92mm fan. Depending on the fan, performance will vary. I'd definitely recommend an slk with a low noise fan like a panaflo, over anything else.

The review was comparing both coolers..with different voltage settings on the FANs. Less voltage makes the fan spin slower...making it quieter. more voltage of course gives better performance..but with some additional noise. The fans are adjustable or their on adjustable controllers allowing you to change between voltages.

With regards the CPU Compatibility issue.... it merely doesn't currently have the required preset set up in the bios...

Just set the CPU up manually by setting CPU Type to user defined... voltage to 1.6 (or 1.65 I think).... FSB to 166, multiplier to whatever it needs to be to get the correct CPU Speed...

And in XP3000, there are both A64 and Barton flavors available usually...
Should work peachy...

at last the answer i was looking for to the barton compatibility thank you.

I presume I need to set multiplyer to 13 if I want to set it up to the speed it runs at 2167/166 =13.

I wont instal it until I get my new cooler.. cos my current CPU is XP2400 is running at surface 49 and core 58 when idle so I doubt that stock fan will be good enough for the new one and no point in diving inside my PC more times than I need to.. :-)

PS. Thanks for all the advice on the coolers too.. think I will jsut look at prices now. and get one ordered.
