I've finally set myself up with a decent benching rig, M0 stepped 2.8Ghz, msi canterwood(got a ic7 max 3, just playing with this to see the diff , had it for a while and gonna sell assuming it ain't good). Also a connect 3d 9800XT.
Few things, so far the chip/board gives up the ghost straight away at 270Mhz, 5:4 ratio with kingston bh-5 that is fine at 269 and under, lowered timings a lot and upped voltage so fairly sure its not the ram. It could be the chip, set at 1.6v though according to bios and core centre thats only giving 1.55 or so, setting 1.8v only reads as 1.63v and fluctuates down to 1.58v. SO i'm assuming either the board gives up on fsb, or voltages are jsut useless when increased as they are entirely unstable above stock. Will hopefully check that on th eic7 max 3 as my 2.4C did 279Mhz fully stable on that. IS the msi board known for being crap with unstable voltages? Just never come across a chip that didn't go at least a little further with a bit more voltage, so i'm really thinking its not the chip.
On to the 9800XT, at first on stock cooling it did 470Mhz core, 400Mhz ram no artifacts. Got the swiffy mcp50 on there and, was expecting a decent bump. I'm running with rear ram sink still ono(for now it was jsut not coming off so left as was) and the front ramsinks off. ANyway, i can run the ram at around 415 now, but the core will only seem to do 480-485Mhz without artifacts. :(
Is that much below average or not? I'm kinda regretting it, and was expecting more as my 9800 pro did 450/360 stock and with just the swiffy block did 500/380 stock voltages.
Is it jsut connect 3d's? sapphire sending out speedbinned cores to the 3rd partys? Basically, its brand new so i'm thinking just slap the stock cooling back on and sell for as much as possible and grab a sapphire. Or is that about what i'm likely to get. I would volt mod, but probo not right now, so i reckon i'm better off getting one that does well at stock as it will probably just be a better core and do better once modded too?
ANyway, any help appreciated.
In the next day or two i'm gonna switch out to the ic7 max 3, might briefly try a better psu(using a thermaltake 480W(found them great for money but can try a antec 550W jsut in case). I guess i'll remount the gfx block.
Happy new year to ya's all too. :toast: :toast:
