Gigabyte K8NPRO or ASUS K8V mobo for me? A64 3000+ on air @ 230fsb?

Other components.

Kingston HyperX PC3500 Bh5
2x36.4GB Raptors

what voltages do both allow? It would be "easier" for me to get the K8NPRO as it would fit in with my other purchases, but if the VIA board is xx amounts better for the money then I'll go for that.

Thanks all :)

I've been thinking the same thing although i am looking at about 2.26GHz with a 266MHz FSB and an't sure what will do it, i have been torn between the Chaintech GF3 150 or the K8V DELUXE. However i an't sure if either boards support mulitplire adjustments.

i do believe that the K8V bios only allows for 260FSB and you'll require voltmods to get that high no?

I believe you can flash the K8NPRO bios to the 940 one to allow for multi changes.

The Chaintech board looks sweet with the heat pipe and that, although in the past SSK7 days i havn't had much luck with Chaintech. Never used Gigabyte before, have been thinging about Leadtech i saw some IMPRESSIVE overclocking options for that huge amounts of voltage for EVERYTHING but are very hard to find in the UK.

a fello brit :)

Where did you find the Chaintech board? The cheapest I could find it was £141 @ Holly Computers.

Ebuyer have a good amount of the Gigabyte ones at a good price, along with the Leadtek K8N. I can find the other Leadteks, but haven't heard good things from people who have bought them here.

The shuttle board has been hailed the best, thats IF i could find the damn thing. Gotta get it shipped from the US I think if i want it.

Saw it at www.microlandtechnology.com for £141inc VAT but with the extras it seems worth it :)

Havn't looked at Ebuyer, might as well do it, dabs.com have a large range of Gigabyte boards also.

http://www.gemma.co.uk seem to have some Sk754 shuttle boards but half of their links are down at the moment. My mistake they do the bare bones PC's.

Holly Computers is cheaper overall for the Chaintech board as it has cheaper delivery.

I hear the Chaintech doesn't allow for changing ram timings though?

God i hope not!! Hopefully they will bringout a better BIOS alough it doesn't really bother me just yet as i am going to at least wait for the NF3 250 and if the price of 939pin chips are decent then i will go for them :)

What about the Albatron K8X800 Pro II?

you've got a 3 month wait for the nforce 3 250 chipset and thats IF they keep to schedule, the albatron is via and the ASUS is better than it.

If you plan on using Raptors then overclocking is not an option unless you use a separate drive. Using Raptors with even moderately high FSB's will scramble your eggs pretty good.;)

Also, the K8V is much better. Speed and stability is best on the K8V. The K8V is the 754 pin version of the SK8V which is the fastest desktop motherboard in the world at this time.:toast:

Intel for me then? or the K8V with 220FSB attainable using raptors? I'd be happy with that.

You can use the Raptors, but not for overclocking the FSB. You'd need a different HD for that.

Sure, go Intel if you don't plan on running the 64 bit stuff and don't mind paying more for a slower computer. You wouldn't be the first to do so.:)

they're both pretty simular in price, actually thats a lie, the a64 costs more. But you are correct, I would be going for a slower computer.

Asus K8V
2x256mb PC3500 Kingston HyperX
2x36.4gb Raptors
256mb DDR2 9800PRO
AMD A64 3000+

Sound OK?

One thing I did hear, was that if you bought a PCI raid card, you could run the FSB much higher and not get corruption.

This true?

Also your "don't use them for overclocking the FSB" comment, that means no overclocking at all? Or you were saying I could get 2.2ghz...

Yeap, i heard a 66MHz PCI card, not sure why people say you should get a 66MHz PCI card for, perhaps future proofing?

Infact i think 220MHz will be fine it's just when you get past that is when you start getting problems, SATA seems to fall over.

sounds good except your 9800pro doesn't use ddr2 ;)
