View Full Version : A little befuddled by my 2.4c/9800np and 3dmark

So I finally got this 2.4c/P4P800/9800np up and running.
Now I'm running 208mhz on the ram on my sig. 3100mhz overall. I pull 5800 on memory bandwidth. But here's the problem... I only get 14000 3dmarks at stock 9800np speeds. When overclocked to 400/330 I only get 16000.
I turned off AA and AF and turned all options to performance. I'm not new to overclocking either. I installed an reinstalled drivers over and over (CAT 3.10). I know 3dmark is only synthetic and all, but there is not feasible reason why I score so crappy on 3dmark.
Can anyone help me? I'm very lost as to what is causing this. And to make it more confusing. The RIG in my sig scored 15k at stock and 18300 at 400/330....???
HELP!!!

i had a similar problem. you need more MHz, man. get past 3.3gHz, and try again

I don't think so. I get the same benchmark score when I bench at 2.4ghz
Yep, 2001 loves that CPU speed.
With some IQ-tweaks i can manage 20-20.5k+ with my XT, but after that i would need somethign special from P4 [ its gonna be watercooled .. but havent gotten around doing that just yet.. same thing on the XT ].
Enought speed for me.. not a 3Dmark freak like some OTHER GUYS HERE :D.

do you have any apps running in the background such as a virus scanner or disk defragger? also if your running your ram in async then I am not supprised either :(
Hmm.. same scores with 2.4G ? Ok, then theres something REALLY wrong.

id like to see his compare link for both cpu speeds so I can investigate
Yeah ANY background proggy is gonna kill the score.
If you want a score you wanna show around disable everything... virus scanners and software firewalls [ of course kill your connection for the couple minutes so you dont have a worm attack :D ].
Run it and the score will come  .

PTK Nah dude. My AMD ran DC++, AIM, Yahoo, Norton AV, F@H
and with all that crap turned off I only gained a small margin (100). I have F@H running and AIM and DC++ and Yahoo... But seriously guys, I turned them off one time just to try it and the score gained like 40 points I believe it was.
Yeah, gotta admit that its not gonna help you.
IF you hit 2.4G and 3G+ ~the same score.. then theres really something odd.

That's with EVERYTHING closed that I can possibly close. Also when checking the task list there is no running processes

when you turn off the stuff, and run the test, do you restart your computer between runs?
DriveEuro
12-19-2003, 11:24 AM
No, but you guys have to understand. I spent 3 hours last night messing with this. Constantly rebooting and changing my overclock. This run that I just did is the highest I've gotten so far.

Also, I not a 3dmark freak. I don't care what my score is really... But what I want it a normal score for my system. Right now I'm really just trying to diagnose what is wrong by using 3dmark.

Also, check out my compare. Look next to the AGP speed. It's all messed up. When i run sandra 2004 ... I can't remember which option, but it tells me that my agp card is running wrong. Damn, I can't remember specifically, i'll dig it up though.

Sorry for all the double posts. But here. This is very interesting...
I dunno if this has anything to do with it....... But I don't have SMARTGART in my vid card driver tabs anymore....

hmmm....run spybot to clean spyware off, then scandisk and defrag your hdd. also what catalyst you using? put openGL and direct3D to performance settings and monitor refresh rate as high as it can handle
DriveEuro

Dude, this is a fresh install. Like I have NOTHING installed yet. No spyware crap. And read my first post, CAT 3.10. Refresh rate is already high as possible.... Not a n00b here, no offense.

"2.4c at 3100. 208mhz ram 7-3-3-2.5 Twinmos 2x256. radeon 9800np at 430/330"
I see your problem. your running your ram async at bad timings plus it reports something wrong with your agp
DriveEuro

I know. But when I ran this at 2.8ghz with a 1:1 ratio it still didn't give me a better score or worse score.
Geforce4ti4200
12-19-2003, 11:45 AM
thats because ram timings are far more important than cpu MHz and this applies for amd as well
DriveEuro
12-19-2003, 11:47 AM
Dude. I pull 5800mb/s. I also ran this when I was pulling 3800mb/s..... SAME FREAKING RESULTS. Now go up to my post where I attached the picture. That's my problem at the moment.

sorry bout that DriveEuro...my bad. what arre others scoring with a similar rig setup on the orb?? i mean, how far are you off? maybe thats how the 9800np is. are you gonna try to mod it to a 9800pro?
DriveEuro
12-19-2003, 11:51 AM
Sorry to all that I seem quite aggrivated. I'm not trying to offend anyone. It's just that I installed this 2.4c in hopes of it being faster than my 1700B.
I don't care about modding it now. My AMD rig in my sig pulled 16K with 9800np at stock. 18K with 9800np at 430/330

I'm not into P4's but I've been doing some reading lately and have you played around with your GAT settings? I also remeber stonedpenguin telling someone about disabling usb enhancment or somthing like that, USB legacy maybe to get a better OC and mem timmings
Here is someone elses GAT settings
Game Accelerator = Auto
Refresh Cycle Time = Enhanced
Read Delay = 4 clocks
Read Delay Adjust = Disabled
Command Per Clock = Disabled

are you sure you are runnig dual channel mode
DriveEuro
12-19-2003, 12:46 PM
Yeah, dual channel is listed in CPUz. I got it figured out. Turns out the chipset drivers never installed. The computer rebooted on me once while I was installing something. Apparently the chipset drivers never got installed. I installed them and now I get 160003dmarks at stock speed.
Thanks to anyone who read and anyone who helped. Sorry I seemed rude. I was just rather annoyed with this for the last couple hours.

Go to display properties - advanced - smartgart and press retest all.. it should ask for a reboot and on the next boot retest the AGP settings.

I get 16000 something at stock. It's a little bit faster than my AMD.... But I still haven't even gotten around to overclocking truthfully. Right now it's ram at 220mhz and cpu at 3.30ghz with 1.56v. I'm still using the stock heatsink as I don't have a replacement yet. Temps are right below 50C (48-50C) while under full load.
So you dont have the smartgart tab.. i would recomend one last reinstall, but this time try to uninstall with the ATI uninstaller prog you can find from www.ati.com
go to drivers then select XP-graphics drivers- radeon [ cant remember the order ] .. then look ad the bottom of that next page.. somethin about ati related software or something like that..
theres the ATI uninstaller... i use it all the time ;). then theres the driver cleaner 2 that you can get from www.driverheaven.net

I know about the DH program. I'm like the 5th highest poster there. Been there for well over a years.
Also, I did use that ati uninstaller just when I just reinstalled the drivers last time. Still didn't revive the smartgart tab.
Thats really odd.. sorry cant think of anything else now [ its friday night here and i have drunk 'few' beers allready ;).

what ram divider are you using? use a lower one. ;)
faruquehabib
12-19-2003, 06:30 PM
yeah, did you try the crappy 3:2 divider? i mean, performance (bandwidth) will suffer, but you may gett a higher cpu oc
glad the problem was resolved. good luck!

Same thing happened to my brother. He has a 2.4C, P4P800-Deluxe, and 9800np, and it would give him crap scores in 3dmark2k1. Apparently, without the chipset drivers, his 9800np would only run at agp 4x, and since updating the driver, agp 8x was enabled and 3kmark2k1 scores had improved.
here is a compare screenie between my 2.4c oced to 3200mhz to your 3100mhz and you can palinly see that you have somthing wrong.. have a peek. hope it helps you..

whoa your beating him by 3700 marks. I know why. I have told him several times that he needs to run his ram at 1:1 at 2-2-2-5 but hes running async ******AND********* at loose timings. also your 9800 pro probably overclocks much better than his. finally your cpu/fsb owns his
DriveEuro
12-20-2003, 01:49 PM
Who are you referring to? Me? Also, that bench I posted was from when my chipset drivers WEREN'T installed. Now I get 18500 at full overclock. I really can't mess with my ram. I need a Vdimm mod. This TwinMos only run 233mhz 7-3-3-2.5 at 2.7v. I have it at 6-3-3-2.5 right now. I don't have much time to tinker today.
