Actually it didnt do any harm to a radeon 9800 or a fx 5900, so it shouldnt do anything to a p4...

berkut - sorry bud I'm way too chicken to try that. I can see me now with a 3.2EE or something...blowtorch in hand

Oops my aim was off got the whole core not just the IHS - you'd hear my screams in Europe.

What method are you using to heat it up to pop the IHS off berkut?

i have a 2.4c on a d1 core...

i think that there would be no problem with getting rid of that ihs... the operation would look like that:

1. take your dremel and cut off the part of the shim wich is glued to the cpu's pcb- this operation would have to be extremelly delicate, there cant be too many vibrations and when making the finishing cuts there would be some problems with high stress on the core so it would have to be done extra slowly...

2. take your razor knife and cut the "shim" off, leaving only the center part wich is soldered to the cpu's core...

3. take your heat gun and start heating the cpu when its upside down, no air can enter the pins area (heat it up from the bottom, facing the heat gun to the ihs) and there cant be any stress on the pins, the cpu has to be ideally leveled

4. when its heated up (the ihs) it should start "flowing" on the core (when you touch it with a screw driver), now you take your screw driver and you push the leaving piece of the ihs on the side so it slips off, DONT try to push the ihs downwards, you might unsolder the core

5. posibly you will need to lap the cpu from the solder leftovers, DO NOT cool the cpu with water or anything else, let it cool off by itself, dont blow on it either

I repeat, this only shows how COULD a operation like that look, maybe some one will try it on his "Z" 2.4c or 3.2ee :D

I hear they killed the chip when they removed the IHS.

I wouldn't recommend it.

The process i described above would be a way to walk around the solder problem intel made to us
