View Full Version : How I custom fit a MCW50-T on a NF7 northbridge

ok, i got the idea of doing this, after seeing 2fast4u's setup... but i decided i'd improve on a few things.
An employee at Swiftech suggested I use soft copper tubing instead of elbows, but since I'd have to buy at least 10' of it, it'd be a bit expensive.
one, make a cleaner looking hold down :p , and two, get most flow rate from using custom bent pvc tubing instead of elbows.
here come the pics:
here's a close up of the bar i made to hold the waterblock down. wrapped with 1/2" OD vinyl to prevent scratching the block.

had to make sure it'd clear the first ram slot; I heated up 1/2" OD PVC with a heat gun, and slowly bent it to desired radius. with the 1/2" OD PVC, i can push it right into the waterblock, and not have to worry about leaking, thanks to the awesome design Swiftech uses.

any questions and/or comments on my work, I'd appreciate it, and would be glad to help out :)
i haven't yet tested the limits of my motherboard yet, nor have i vmodded it... but that should all change this weekend ;)

my water temps get below freezing, around -10C
i have no idea yet on the northbridge temps though, as i havent' even hooked it up yet..

Almost forgot how far have you got your cpu overclocked?

i've gotten it to 2650 in the bios, but 3dmark2001 stable @ 2550mhz

Now time to beat my score ;) Which was on AIR
Should be pretty easy.

Hey come you have pics of two different vga cards?

I am glad to see I have inspired some creativity in NB cooling with the 50-T. Looks great! I like the use of the pvc to clear the mem sticks. I used 90's and it cut in on my flow a little. I will be mounting the 50-T on my ZNF-3 150 soon and will be posting some pics myself.

Whats the resistance you used for 1.95v VDD on your 8rda+?
I have a 509 ohm resistor.. should put me about 1.93v according to (176/resisitor)+current VDD (1.57).

How'd you come to that 176/resistor+current vdd conclusion? Just curious as I always wondered what resulting voltages i'd get from using different value resistors or trimmers.

thanks guys.. this weekend the system will be up and running, so new scores hopefully :)
and one of the cards is a dead 9600pro i just test fit things on.

Its on a FAQ page for the 8RDA+.

Looks nice but wheres the insulation if your using a chiller? I have -19C water and 2 wraps of pipewrap on my tc4 rev 2 and it still frosts on the edges...

well, what do i need insulation for when the outside temperature is -10C..

So your gona run outside with a chiller?

afireinside, you could delete your second post if you want.. :)
stangman, please don't take my words badly but I just don't see how supercooling the NorthBridge on the v2.0 boards will do any good.. I would be totally amazed if the cooling affects FSB oc'ing.. it .... just..... do not work on ALL of my v2.0 boards..
... but works fantastic on all v1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 boards I had. ya know... this is why I'm so pissed... no use of cooling on the v2.0.. what's the deal here?.. I.. dun... get it.

I forgot you can delete here :p: Did it delete or no?
And thanks for telling me NOW ;) I wasted 40 bucks on an NB block than huh?

well, i can boot up at 230fsb now.. so the cooling did do something... :)
i gotta do a vdd and vdimm mod...
Stang_Man
12-20-2003, 08:44 PM
dumbass me...
while i was doing the vdd and vdimm mods.. i kinked the tubing, causeing the pressure to build up, and it sprung a leak in a weak hose clamp.
board isn't booting up as of yet, gonna try again after it's completely dry.. hopefully it'll work, highest i got in windows was 9.5x235
10/10.5 multipliers are "iffy"... no matter the fsb

That sucks :( Hope the boards still good. Mine blows at 10x to... I'm gona try 11 after I get done playing halo.
Are you running your rig outside with a regular rad or something?

up in my shed, in the 25F weather with chilled water.
have to wrap a towel around my hard drive so it doesn't freeze.

is it bad when hdd's get excessively cold? do the mechanics shrink and bind? or do they get brittle and shatter?
I'm looking to run my machine outside for some extreme overclocking, but I don't want dead parts.
Stang_Man

when the hard drive is working in the cold, it sounds very bad, harsh sounding.

The bearings in the drive will not like cold temps much.
5-10C is minimum operationtemp according to the manufactures.

Just put a thermal probe on the hard-drive, put it in a box surrounded by foam and bubble wrap. It should heat up to a decent temp in there. I'm geussing 30C.
