View Full Version : thinking about building a new amd rig?
hey guys...
will i think its time to move on to somthing new. i want to build a new FX/64 system. i dont really care about the 64bit side of things im more into the idea cause of the 1600mhz bandwith on the bus and the extra cache the new chips offer. plus i see they oc real nice wich is a bonus!
what do you guys think of the new amd chips? think id be safe trying out the new amd 64 3000 series chip they have? the thing costs 287 bucks wich isnt nearly as bad as the 400/700 price tags of the 3200 series and the FX chips. i know there are a few of you guys already running these chips what do you guys recomend? i hear they have a 940 pin FX comming out? wounder if they will release a 300 dollar range chip? ok well please if any of you guys want to add to this and help me out? by all means feel free....
thx perc,

I'd wait for it and the chipsets to mature a bit if you aren't concerned with being bleeding edge for a while.

jepp wait a lil, there will be faster boards with 1ghz HT link out soon and there will be a 3000+ a64 for ~200$
yeah thats what i thought you would say guys... oh well gues for now ill just try and research the chips and learn about them. that should keep me bussy for a while. oh hey is there a big diff in performance in the amd64 and the amd fx chip? thats the part that confuses me about these new chips. i mean the amd64 3000 thats not the fx chip right? ok will i deff need to do some reading cause i know nOTHINg on this subject :p:
thx guys, perc.

Just wait... The FX is the higher end chip. Its faster but uses registe2red memory in DC. The 939 pin AFX is comming out like mid next year wich will use standard DDR in DC and eventually move to DDR-II, PCI express and whatever.

ok well other then the ECC memory is there any other performance gains or losses by not waiting on the new AMD FX chips? Also whats the scoop with the new AMD 64 3000 chip? is that going to be a nice ocable chip? i notice its older brothers are the 3200 and the 3400 series chips so does this mean the 3000 series chip is really a 32/3400 series chip that got relabled and marked down for what ever reason? kinda like the JIUHB's? anyone wanna help me out here? im just asking all the questions i can think of cause i wanna do whats right. so far im leaning on the wait but who knows you guys may tell me somthing that makes me wanna buy? one thing for sure ill do whats right so dont think your wasting your time helping me. i wont wast your time and go out and do it anyways... just wanted to tell you guys that.
ok guys thx for your help... please keep it comming.

The 3000+ A64 is 2ghz with 512k L2 cache. Stay away...

..... basically the advantage to the FX series presently
is the fact that you can do the multiplier changes.
The A64 series are O/C'ed with strictly FSB. And the
memory controller is within the chip itself. (wreck)
Motherboards for these new chips are a mess. It
would be wise and wait unil the nForce 250 boards
are on the streets. The pin design for the A64 are
going to become the econo line before too long.
Upgrade right now basically all you can say is you
have a 64 bit compatable unit.
I can't see making the change until Mboard Mfg's
put something together worthwhile. That and allow
prices to come down some on these chips.
EDIT: Here's some read for ya:
