Well, we did it... got it all mounted up, but no go.

I gave the back of the card a run over with spray-on silicon conformal coating just to be safe... and this seems to be the cause of the prob...!

With card out of machine and Vapo up n running, it all gets luverly n cold. Put card in machine, GPU side gets cold, Back side feels warm. Not right we thought, so popped it back on air again.

Same. Back of card got so hot you could hardly touch it... cleaned off the Silicon Spray with isopropynol and voila. Card runs perfectly again...

Anyone else had probs like this using Silicon Conformal spray on Graphics Cards???

See... coldplate gets cold... contact is PERFECT (have checked and rechecked!)

Insulated it all up, cold side still gets cold, contact still perfect...

Get it up n running and back of card gets hot. Clean off the Silicon, card is fine... just seems odd as I've always used this stuff for condensation proofing and have never had these probs with either my 9700 or my NF7-S, both of which have been coated...

not sure if this will help or not...but the small factory heatsink over the 3 reg. i had one that if it didnt get air on it it would get the card hot as hell.i ended up forcing some flat sheet copper strips into the stock sink to cool it down.

do you think maybe the coating is insulating that small area just enough to cause a problem?

Nah, I masked it off so the only area that got coated was nearly a 3" square area around the back of the GPU... but it could be cos I forgot to mask off the hercules' stock rear heatsink so I've now suffocated it... will have to crack it off as it's held on with summat damn sticky and see if that sorts it...
