Hey guys,
I'm about to upgrade my vid card (Gainward Ti4200 128mb) to either the Asus 9600xt or a Saphire 9800se. I just need some more guidance as to which one would be worth the money. I'm assuming they would perfrom similar?
Any help?

The 9600 perform better out of the box, but on 9800SE you can enable the 4 closed pipelines, and if you are lucky you will have a 9800np. The chance that the mod go wrong is big tho, and many cards are only 128bit, they will just be like 9500PRO with an R350 core if the mod is successful.

get 9800se mod it and make it 9800pro which performs much better than 9600xt

The memory chips on the sapphire are not good enough for the mod. You have most chance on a succesfull mod to 9800pro with a powercolor R9800se. Unfortunately, these are very hard to find in the USofA.
Powercolor = hynix
Sapphire = infineon
I'd say take the 9600xt...

HL2 comes free with the 9600xt and you don't have to worry about the card not being able to softmod.
You're best bet for a 9800xxx to an eight pipe would be a 9800nonpro with the l-shaped ram pcb. Any of the non-l shaped pcb's are four pipe only from what i have read. Anyone know if bestbuy still has those moddable 9800 nonpro's? That would prolly be your best bet!

Are you saying that 100% of hercules 9800se aiw will successfully mod to a 9800pro aiw? I doubt it.

What if we add a 9700pro into the equation?
I spent a bunch of money on my w/c stuff and i can't spend to much on the vid card. I got my old Ti4200 sold allready.. so. Any help would be greatful!
BTW, Mr.Icee said in his thread that the 9600xt only performs as well as a Ti4200 out of the box. :confused:

hes probably right as far as 3dmark 2001 goes and older dx7 and some dx8 games perhaps :)
9700p are fine but i think a moddable 9800np would be better.
A decent real(324/310) 9700p should be able to clock a stable 378core and 337mem without any issues. So far i've had 2 9700p's that could run 9800p speeds outta the box 100% stable.

What kind of work is needed to be done on the 9800np? Just a bios flash?
Would this card work?

Thats a 9800se not a 9800np. The se is missing half the pipelines and is a poor performer.

I thought it was the same card. :confused:
Where can I get a moddable 9800np?
Maybe i'd just be better off with the 9600xt lol.

Thanks Techmaster,
Back to my original question... What needs to be done to it to make it a pro?

The way the NP's work is they simply had Samsung "3.3"ns memory. It was just an underclocked Pro. Flash it with the Pro BIOS and you have the real thing, and the memory clocks the same as the 2.86ns.
They don't make them with the Samsung memory anymore though, so in order to do this you will have to find an older one. The newer ones have Etrontech or Infineon.

I have to disagree on that one, my powercolor R9800se runs happyly at pro speeds with all pipelines enabled...

Then its not an SE anymore, is it...

Wel, it was a SE before I softmodded it...
But you're right, now it is a pro...
But what techmaster says is not completely correct, since there are quite a lot of card that can be softmodded (but not the one made by sapphire)

Less than 50% of the cards can be softmodded.
