I still have not had a chance to check out windows new operating system and was looking for some input from somebody who has used both 7 and vista.

Some pro's and cons would be nice to hear.

Spend the $$$ or not is the question.

I will be using both the 32 and 64 bit systems if i do change.

I used Vista Ultimate 64-bit almost sense its launch. I used the Win 7 RC on my lappy and now have Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my main comp.

I really love it. When I first started using it I liked it but not as much as I do now.
It is basically Vista plus a lot of awesome features and tweaks that make things easier for multi-taskers. If you force yourself to use the new features (like the awesome new task bar) I think you will find you are more productive, I certainly did.

If there is something more specific you are wanting to know ask away.

*definitely worth the upgrade imo! :yepp:
vista = hdd trashing, even with indexing turned off - poor use of cpu, ram & hdd compared to W7/WS08R2 - i've been using WS08R2 (W7 based) for approx a month now - it is far more efficient with resources

I use both Vista Ultimate 64-bit & Win7 Ultimate 64-bit , Win7 Ultimate 64-bit is basically Win7 Ultimate 64-bit SP3, not worth the upgrade IMHO.

Do you remember Windows 98 and then it was replace by Windows 98 SE, well about the same for Win7 over Vista

No huge difference from Vista SP2 tbh.

if u have a key or can get one cheap (like if u are a student or go to a MS event) then its worth it, and if u are on a laptop its worth it. but for a properly specked desktop i dont see the need for most users to update

that said i am updating but i have technet so its not really costing anything

W764 is great, but I upgraded from XP64, which was definitely worth it.

I think if you can get a discount on licenses it is definitely worth upgrading from Vista, but I don't know what MS offer's are for that path.

Hmmm... conflicting information, i was afraid of that.

Maybe i will try one copy and see how it goes.

And judging the posts above I'd say the general opinion is that it's worth trying as long as it's inexpensive. But you decide ofc.

No, it's more like what XP was to 2000.

If you can afford it get Windows 7, it's well worth it.

Pros:
Win 7 is snappier. The Win7 control panel is about 5 times faster than it was in Vista. Opening the network settings takes less than a second compared with Vista's 5-10sec.
If you have a multiple computers, Homegroups makes sharing files as easy as copying between internal hard drives. Simple. one password to join the homegroup and everything just works. no more workgroup nonsense trying to get everything to talk together.
the new taskbar makes multitasking super easy. just have every program you use as a button and you can navigate every open window without having to look around for what you want.
fast wake from sleep, only takes a second or two.
Easy to include more folders in Librarys, like my pictures or my movies. you can even have network devices as long as they're indexed. Nice for me with my 1TB NAS.
Able to burn ISO files, no need for 3rd party software.
auto switches sounds when manually switching between sound devices. on vista you had to close the program to get it to switch to the other device.

Cons:
Sometimes the display settings wont recognize a new display, or incorrectly sets the resolution to something beyond its range.
Still have to disable then re-eneable the network device when doing a lot of switching between networks before it gets a dhcp address.
still cant mount a ISO file.
built in DVD burning software makes dvds that are not compatible with all devices.

DUDE WIN7 actually lives up to the hype, period. it is just that much better, and you dont realize how good it really is until you go back to another computer running vista. The "feel" is different. Clunky. Slow. Old.
you will have to use it to see for yourself, it really comes down to you and your preferences.

it is better but for a desktop like u would find on xs i dont see it being needed vista ran great on my comp and its not much slower than 7. on the laptop though its a huge difference

I don't care for the new taskbar, but you can make it like the old one. I've been using 7 since beta and it's great.

Download it, install it, enjoy it and you have a few months to find a good deal and input a key;).

Having had Windows 7 RC on my machine almost from the day it came out until my shiny new copy arrived last week I am quite impressed with it especially the improvement over XP however......

.....I was never a big Vista user either until recently, I started using Vista Ultimate X64 on a second machine and to be honest its pretty good as well. I honestly thought about canceling my Windows 7 pre-order, if I hadn't of got one of the cheap offers on it I probably would have. Windows 7 still hogs a lot of resources compared to XP which is one of the reason Vista was not so popular, the difference is the majority of machines now are 2Gb Dual cores which wasn't the case when Vista was released.

Personally I think unless you can get a good deal I would stick with Vista for a while.

Same, but i still can't believe this gap they have put around the clock and between the system tray icons that make it stick out way more than the old one, i've had to also reduce the amount of active icons i have showing because of this. As well as that, the memory for what icons you want showing is broken, i will have temps showing and set correctly to always show then after next restart one of the icons are not there. The little arrow to show hidden icons was also much better in Vista:

Ι will install them tomorrow or the upcoming week.
From what i've read in many forums, 7 are obviusly better than Vista.

It's worth!

well i understand that, but even on big ol fast computers it just "feels" old is what i am trying to quantify, which is hard to do. My computer is a i7 920 @ 4.4 tri-sli 260's and a 8 member raid array taht gets 1.8 gb/s read speed......
and vista still "feels slow"...i know it aint the comp!

I went ahead and dropped the $ and bought two copies of 7 Pro 64-bit for my desktops and a copy of 7 Pro 32-bit for my netbook. I paid about $420 for all three off the egg. IMO, well worth the $. Especially when it comes to boot times. My Q9650 rig went from about 1 minute 15 sec boot to about 30 sec. My netbook went from 1:30 to :45, and my other E6700 system went from 1 minute and a half to a little under a minute. The Homegroup utility makes home networking MUCH easier. Plus, I don't know if there is a maximum GB limit on this, but it seems ReadyBoost can now utilize all of the free space of an SD card, whereas with Vista it seemed to max out at 4GB. I have an 8GB microSD card that ReadyBoost is utilizing about 7.7GB of. All of my systems now seem zippier (of course it could be because I reformatted all of the OS hard drives), and it just has a "cleaner" look to it. The Libraries are neat too, and makes cataloging all of your media files and documents a breeze. The only issue I've had is my "old" (2005) Intel board on my E6700 system is having a PCI driver issue, and Intel's site says they're not planning on providing a Windows 7 driver for this "old" mobo (fuggers!). All in all, for me, the best OS upgrade experience yet.

Yeah, I had Vista x64 Ultimate SP2 and I liked it a lot. But, Windows 7 is definitely better, especially the way it uses resources.

Vista's super fetch is too aggressive, but Windows 7's is just right. It doesn't page your memory for dumb :banana::banana::banana::banana: like Vista does..
