Hi,
Guys i had Bought a new Workstation With 2 Xeon E5520, i am very pleased with the performance But very upset with the noise. After switch it on it starts normally but after 5 second all the fans start blowing like jet plane engine and make so high noise just unbearable. i don't know what to do please give some suggestions.
My Spec
Intel Xeon 5520 Quad Core 2.26 ghz
Intel S5520 Sc Motherboard
Hard Disk Western Digital Raptor 10k rpm150 gb
Hard Disk Western Digital 1 Tb Western Digital 32 mb
Dvd rw Hp Sata
Graphics card Nvidia Quadro Fx 1800
Chassis Chieftec smart series modal no WH-01bb + 600 watts Psu
Ram 2 gb ddr3 ECC Ram (Total 8 GB)
24in Monitor Hull hd
Please if some body know about it give me some suggestions.

Use a fan controller OR replace the stock heatsinks.

Let me guess....you have the Intel STS100C heatsinks.;)
I tried the same ones in my workstation, due to the fact that they were nice and compact. But, unfortunately, they sound like dustbusters on steroids and my board really doesn't have any idea how to properly control their speed. They would constantly cycle from full speed to slow speed and back again (even at idle)....driving me crazy. I have a high tolerance for computer noise, but the noise from these things was way past my threshold of tolerance. I went back to the Thermalright Ultra 120s I was using before...even though they are much more of a pain to install (especially the fans and their metal wire clips ) and clutter the case considerably. The reduction in noise is well worth it.

Yes i have intel STS100:(
So you suggest that i should remove my heatsinks? But it is a good heatsinks for inter 1366 chipset and i have seen people Who had same configuration as mine but they don't have any problem of noise
my be this problem is because bios are not updated but i have recently updated the bios (5 days ago). While bios are updating at some time fans become very slow and sound fine but after full update it
again become a Dustbuster. Well there is one good thing about it there is zero dust in my cabinet He He He:rolleyes:
well Guys i think i need more suggestions From Xeon 5500 owners.

I'm not sure what your SC5520 motherboard has in terms of fan control options, but mine had options that were rather vague, with Fan Control ON and Fan Control OFF, with a duty cycle option of varying percent that really didn't seem to work at all (the fans were still ear splitting regardless of what I selected for duty cycle). I'd hope that Intel would be better at controlling the speed of the fan, especially with one of their own heatsinks, and I think the STS100C was the heatsink that they anticipated would be used with their motherboard, so there is no reason why they it shouldn't be more elegant. The aggressiveness of the controller on my Tyan motherboard seemed to have two choices, full speed and slow speed:rolleyes:. I'm hopeful Tyan releases a new BIOS with better tuning of the fan controller.
Also, regardless of fan controller tuning, the fans will still end up at full speed with the machine under full load for extended periods. Which may be reason enough to consider a quieter alternative if you run your machine at full load for any duration.

So it mean i have to start realizing that i have to live with this F sound for the rest of my life.
Great.
But Thanks

Or you could simply replace the coolers. From memory that Chieftec case has a fairly large amount of internal room, meaning you could probably fit a larger, tower-style heatsink on those CPUs - more surface area means more area to dissipate heat means the fans don't have to work as hard = less noise.

You can get a fan control (like Zalman ZM-MFC3) and run your fans at reduced speed (~ 80%), but you will loose cooling performance and may have to turn it up again.
A better alternative, as others mentioning too, would be to get a better CPU cooler (like TRUE or Prolimatech Megahalems) with some high-performance & low-noise fans (like Scythe Slipstream or Noctua NF-P12-1300 ) and replace all your funs with these. You may run these fans at reduced speed without loosing much of the cooling performance, and get a really cool&quiet system.

What fans do you recommended for the xeon E5520 and Intel S5520 Sc Motherboard.

Hi everybody finely i got the solution.
If you are an Intel board owner you can simply upgrade the new version of the bios and yous fans will become absolutely silent
i have an Intel Board S5520 Sc and i upgrade my bios, it is now working silent. well i am very happy for your support and comments.
I can tell you a step by step process for upgrading the bios if you are going through the same problem.
Thanks,
