I have XP installed on my old HDD.

I bought a new HDD and windows 7

I installed windows 7 on my new HDD, my old HDD was plugged in at the same time of the installation.

Everything runs great. I then put my pc back together, leaving my old HDD out, as i only want my new HDD with 7 installed, the old HDD can go hide in the cupboard.

When i did this, i couldnt boot into windows 7, so i plugged the old HDD back in and i can boot into windows 7.

I'm guessing it something to do with the Boot order in xp, but i have no idea how to fix this.

So far i have checked the boot order in windows 7 which is set to:
Windows 7 (C:\windows) Current OS ; Default OS

So this must mean the boot isnt working for windows 7 without the other hDD

Any ideas? I want to somehow make sure windows 7 will boot from the new HDD without the old HDD being plugged in.

Thanks :)

The boot loader for both drives sits on your first drive (the XP drive). Reinstall WITHOUT the XP drive installed ;)

ARGH ! :(

Any way of fixing it without a re install? I already loaded pretty much everything onto it.

Not that I know of :( I also want to remove (well, format) my (corrupt) XP drive but then my Win7 drive is going to be an issue :/

Mmmmaybe able to edit the boot ini (with both HDs installed) using the repair off the XP disc. Then remove the XP hd and do it again with the W7 disc on the W7 hd. Just guessing cause I've never tried the repair on W7. Do you have a W7 disc?

Yeah i tried repairing using the W7 disc and it couldnt recognise that there was an installation of windows 7 at all :(

It won't, the info it needs is stored on the first drive like I said ;)

u should be able to have just the windows 7 disk in, then run fix boot to redo the boot loader (u may need to retarget the windows install)

next time make sure to remove the other hard drives that u arnt installing to, it will help prevent things like this and accidentaly formatting the wrong drive

Hmmm, that might work. Boot to the recovery console and type fixboot , you may need to do fixmbr as well?
