I am currently running the RTM version of Windows 7 and will buy an upgrade to Windows 7 Pro from Vista Ultimate.
I plan on changing my system disks to SSD when I do the upgrade. My question is, I will install the new SSD's and then attempt to do the install of Windows 7 however, there won't be a copy of Vista on the disks. Is this necessary for an upgrade or will the installation ask me for my Vista key?

I would hate to have to install vista first and then do a full install.
Anybody know?

Thanks

you cant upgrade vista ulti to 7 pro (to do 7 pro u need vista biz or lower), it wont ask for a vista key but u may have to have an older windows installed.

a better idea is to get an OEM or OEI copy they are the same price as the retail upgrade but if u get the OEM u cant transfer the license to another user without transfering the liscensed device with it but u can change licensed devices so there is no real restriction

Ok, maybe I am not picking the right upgrade. I'm not sure what the vista ultimate to windows 7 upgrade is called, but it doesn't matter. The question is, will I need a vista install on my SSD's before doing the upgrade, or will the Windows 7 install ask me for a Vista key?

Thanks

To the best of my knowledge you can do either. If doing a clean install, I'm pretty sure you need to insert your old Vista disc and give the installer a Vista key to do a clean install with an upgrade version of Win7.

It will ask for the Vista key, then, (don't quote me on this) install vista and activate it, then install 7. If you were to just buy an OEM retail copy of 7, you can skip all this hassel. Or if you're a student, buy a copy of the retail for cheaper @ $30.

If your already running windows 7 RTM why buy another copy?? The full retail release is RTM so there is no difference between the two.
