I have some noob questions with regard to phase

First off, Hi. I post a lot at the EVGA forums so some of you may or may not know me. To those that do, Hi. To those that don't, nice to meet you. :)

I actually have quite a few questions, all regarding phase change. So let's get started shall we?

1. Are there any current guides on how to build a phase unit? (my goal temps would be around -60 to -100C.)

2. In order to hit somewhere in my goal temps what kind of unit would I need?

3. How much would a unit that could hit those temps likely cost? (<-- that's a big issue.)

4. This may be a really stupid question but I was planning on using Art Eraser on the board around the socket, what do I need to do in the socket as far as insulation?

5. How loud would it be? (Not too bothered with that though)

2. You would need a cascade for that. Thats a unit with 2 or more compressors in it.
3.About 3000GBP but then you get a kickass unit.

4. Depends on socket, some use some sort of grease but when i bench with dry ice i dont have anything in the socket except the cpu ;)
5. Depends on builder, can be really loud but also pretty much silent.

Cascade would be nice... Bit pricey though.. I don't suppose it'd be possible to build one for around $700(US)? :rofl: That's a good thing, I didn't want to mess with the socket. :cool:

Doubt you can get a cascade that cheap. Although you can get a good singelstage for that amount i guess. That can hold around -40 at 260w load. There are several skilled builders here on the forum.

Well i am not actually a phase change guy ....But I have researched this in the past and I think I can get pretty close to the ball on answering your questions....

You can find virtualy everything need to to know by reading posts here but building a phase unit does require some experience to pull of the lower temp units. Most on here will advise a single stage to cut your teeth but that will blow your temp goal out of the water....



2. In order to hit somewhere in my goal temps what kind of unit would I need?

Probably a three or four stage cascade and to build that will require experience particularly with gases and of course the necessary certification to handle them.
On hindsight a 4 stage would be overkill a 3 stage should do it.



3. How much would a unit that could hit those temps likely cost? (<-- that's a big issue.)

Parts only probably in the minimum region of $1000 (probably more especially for 4 stage.) and hours of diligent work.

Check the LN2 section full guides on this sort of thing.

You wouldn't want to sit too close to a 3-4 stage cascade.

Doubt you can get a cascade that cheap. Although you can get a good singelstage for that amount i guess. That can hold around -40 at 260w load. There are several skilled builders here on the forum.

I'm actually kinda hoping to be able to build my own. :D I'd just need lots of info on how, and what tools I need. (My dad has lots) :clap: Any idea what kind of idle temps that would get?

Well im building my own now to. And if you are planing on building it from new parts it will be cheaper to get a custom built unit for you. Well thats how it will turn out for myself but its a great experience at least :ROTF:

Like you I am pretty new to this :). I just started couple of weeks ago. First started then began reading :). Mainly because most of the stuff makes better sense on the way. Although I have virtually unlimited supply of parts&freons as well as all the necessary tools . It really takes time and knowledge. For the first week all of my friends thought I am on a vacation :D. Funny part of it is that everyone I asked in the trade had no clue why would I need something under -40c. Take your time in the reading but dont over do it. Results do encourage progress.

Normally I tolerate 'newbie' questions but you just did bother to look at anything did you. Use the search feature. Use a search engine. Ask yourself - can I afford to break a CPU and/or motherboard? because it is a real possibility when using a phase-change rig.

You did however not through in the ultimate demand for 24/7 usage of the super-bling rig-to-be.
