View Full Version : 64bit - how the hell do you manage?

I've been having nothing but problems with drivers since I installed windows 7 64bit. I'm aware that some of the problems do relate to the fact that I'm running windows 7, but using 64bit has by far been the biggest problem yet.
First my cisco card drivers didn't work. Fortunately windows update fixed this.
Now my edimensional headset won't work, even after the update.
And there control panel for the x-fi card that followed with the motherboard doesn't work, so I'm stuck with 2.0 sound on my 5.1 system, even after I ran the supposed "fix" on this forum.
THIS IS JUST GREAT. I'm quite frustrated now. How the hell do you guys manage?:confused:

Apparently you just have bad luck, I've been using 64 bit for a long...long time and have had issues only a single time with a printer that didn't have drivers that would work on 64 bit (Vista) but it works fine on Windows 7 with default drivers

Running 64 bit since Vista beta builds. No problems other than ASUS Xonar DX not working with default drivers (you had to jump through some loopholes to get it working back in the day, but its fine now).

do u have an xfi, or do u have the proprietary add in card thats a realtec onboard with creative codecs. and the why would your headset need drivers, if u got a usb headset then u are getting what u paid for.
ive used 64bit since xp and the only problems ive ever had were with printers and sound. printers are easy u just mod the INI for a similar printer with 64bit support to incude your printers ID. for sound its a pain but if u figure out who made it u can get direct drivers, IE i dont think that u have xfi so get the driver then install the xfi applications (might need compatibility) mode
asus has the driver, and the xfi utility

edit- windows7 can use the same drivers as vista, so if there isnt one for win7 there should be one for vista

With the exception of ancient hardware, I've not found 64-bit to be a challenge. I've ran without many issues attributed to 64-bitedness since 2005.

I think the overall vibe here is that you have astoundingly bad luck, because you seem to be running all the hardware in that tiny, tiny <5% of modern consumer electronic devices that lack drivers for a 64-bit OS.
Re your specific problems, I can't help with any other than to note that if Windows Update fixed your network card issues, are you familiar with downloading and installing newer driver packages for your hardware than those included on the CDs that come with them? I don't mean to sound disparaging, but Windows Update is just downloading drivers that manufacturers have alerted MS to, so if that's fixing your problems then it means there are newer drivers available which you could go grab yourself.
Re the "headset", though, it'd help if you could post specifics. Is it standard 3.5mm audio jack? Is it USB? Manufacturer? Model?

I have an X-Fi Supreme sound card (the one that follows with the Rampage 2 Extreme). I can find no drivers on creatives own website. The drivers from Asus' own ftp don't work, neither with the fix found in the Intel subforum. I'll try reinstalling them and see if it works.
My headset is a Edimensional Pro 5.1. I downloaded the newest drivers form their website, never used the ones with the CD. Edimensional also says that there are windows 7 issues, so I guess it has nothing to do with 64 bit. It just sucks to have a headset without a working mic :P

That's odd, the drivers i got from ASUS website are working flawlessly and, as you can see by my signature, i have a R2E and run Windows 7 x64. I don't recall if i had to use any tricks to get it to work (i mean the Creative layer, the 140MB+ file) but it's working as it's supposed to, even asked for the serial number. You might have to run it in Vista compatibility mode.

It appears that I'm an idiot, and didn't look enough.
Now I have the newest widows 7 64bit soundmax and x-fi drivers from Asus' R2E download page. Also downloaded the newest Vista 64bit drivers from Edimensionals website. So what should I install first?

Soundcard drivers then the Creative layer.

09-20-2009, 04:20 AM
Right, so the creative stuff works now :) Except that it only registers 2 of my 5 speakers :( And my headset mic and config panel still doesn't work, but the sound is great :P Guess that's just poor support from Edimensional.

You need to go to the control panel (either the Creative Control Panel or Windows Control Panel) and set the speakers mode to 5.1 as it defaults to 2.0 if i'm not mistaken.

when you mix up parts and OS's you end up with inevitable problems. Thats Apple's whole angle with not offering their OS to other systems, they want it to work right. It sounds like you have a extraneous problem thats not really identifiable...ive had problem after problem with my Vista 64 with my custom build...its just how it goes with PC's

I've been running Windows 7 x64 since the first Beta release in a dual Win7_x64/Vista_x64 boot. I have been running just Windows 7 Ultimate x64 since the RC 7600 release with ZERO problems related to the operations system. I love Win 7 x64. I have had only 1 problem and that is with my HP OfficeJet J6480. HP does not have a FULL driver set available yet but Windows 7 x64 allows me to print from the printer and manually scan from the machine. Just can't use the nice one button scan to PC feature. Not Windows 7 x64 fault.

thats normally RAM issue, win 7 seems to be a lot "stricter"? on overclocks then vista or XP I had this problem too.. :(

0 issues with Windows 7 RTM Ultimate x64
I also have the eDimensional headset, the drivers are not windows 7 ready yet. I did get the mic and sound to work by installing it manually. However, the control panel to configurate the EQ and all the sound options is unavailable at this time.
I switched back to XP x64 for now and Im glad I went back for now.
I've had issues with Win 7x64. First my Emu soundcard will only work in ASIO mode, so no sound from java, IE8, or any normal program. Also only one of my two eSata harddrives is not hot swappable with Win 7x64. No problems with either on WinXP 32 bit.

64bit hasnt been a problem for me at all thankfully, guess im a bit lucky the only time i ever had an issue was setting up my dads new 64vista and thats because linksys/cisco dont have 64bit drivers for half their network cards took me a minor hassale of finding the chipset maker drivers and installing that but really thats been the only hitch i've ever had running 64 vs 32 (unless you want to count the old coretemp issue)

I haven't had driver issues with x64 in about 6 years. I also do the necessary research and make sure hardware has the proper drivers before buying.

I've found that things work best when I build the computer for the OS, instead of expecting the OS to handle the computer. XP64 with zero unexpected issues.
now, that doesnt mean there aren't problems, just that the ones I have are fully expected. The occasional older bit of software doesnt work (anything made to run on a 16bit machine, for instance), some games just hate it (though very rare now), and even microsoft forgets about it (they made certain live messenger updates mandatory install, but forgot to let it install on a XP64bit machines until many complained).
even with those expected issues, I love my 64bit system. Anything necessary that I have to run that won't work on this rig can always get stuck on the laptop.

First off, not using punctuation does not make you look cool, it makes you look 12. We have multiple sections for discussing issues related to Operating Systems and drivers and I would advise looking there, and perhaps creating a thread. Coherence is a good thing.

Wow that was epic :ROTF: No problems what so ever. Vista 64 and 7 64, heck on our PCs i didn't even need to download drivers! Everything worked out of the box, of course it's best to download the latest anyway. Canon, HP Printers, X-Fi Xtremegamer...
only one slight issue (i think it's Nvidias problem) is not being able to change the scaling settings in the Nvidia control panel.

ironic but xp64 is the worse 64 bit out of the 3 (xp,vista and 7)
nowadays 99% of manufactures take out 64bit drivers. and if not don't buy their products.
if something gets wrong probably is a user mistake not os/driver/hw issue.

Win 7 RC2 64bit works flawlessly on my 18 month old core 2 laptop, but this is a test install, I do research with it. I have had very few problems with hardware support in all the OSes I have used in the past. But I have always waited at least 12 months after a Windows OS release before I committed to it. It usually takes that long for hardware manufacturers and Microsoft themselves to fix the flaws and resolve incompatibilities. Although my advice maybe of little use to you or anyone else who wants to run on the bleeding edge of hardware and software, I still suggest not using any newly released Windows OS for at least 12 months.

What will you do after the RC expires? That used to be my rule as well but i jumped on the 7 bandwagon, soon after someone hooked me up with a Vista key so i really didn't need to buy it:lol2:

Win 7 should have had enough fixes/patches released and hardware manufacturers may have developed all necessary drivers by then, who knows? But once the RC does expire I will format the partition to ext3, obtain a retail copy of Win 7 and install it in a vm for continued research. I didn't mention my lappy dual boots Ubuntu and Win 7. Ubuntu is the main OS it runs XP in a vm very nicely. I guess I will eventually install Win 7 on my XP gaming machine, but that is around 12 months away. Don't get me wrong I love new tech, learning how it works, what's new etc. But after all the pain that an upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 caused, I vowed to never again upgrade anything but a test setup to the latest MS offering.

I just bought Win7 Pro the other day (first time I've ever actually bought a OS too...) and have had few issues with drivers I think the only problem I had was the voltage on my front USB ports and brief problems with my wireless card.
I was confused though as to why they sell the upgrade and clean install packages when they are essentially the same (ones cheaper obviously) and do the same.
