View Full Version : Help Overclocking P55 and i7 860

So I just picked up this EVGA P55-SLI and i7-860 the other day at the local Microcenter. Seeing as this is my third system I really only bought it to learn how to properly overclock, then hopefully move on to some more serious OC'ing.

So I have been working with it all day and below is what I've come up with. Keep in mind this is on the Stock Heatsink and my first time really overclocking let alone ever using this platform. So any ideas on what I can improve or how? Any general tips? I could use the help....Oh an I will be putting my CM V10 on it to see if that helps or maybe water...although temps never really got that high...

I think you did a really good job. Is this a suicide run? If not, then run LinX to stress test it. Then, you probably want an aftermarket cooler after 65 degrees Celsius.

Yea, I had OCCT running for a while, and it seemed good, I'll run it for longer later tonight.

I have a Coolermaster V10, which I'm about to install on it. I was more concerned if my voltages were too high/low and maybe memory timings...

I'm just new too overclocking and I want to get some practice in....after this I plan on working on my AM3 system and then my i7 920. I'm also debating if I want to get more serious and finally buy a CPU pot and test some DICE....I'm hoping someone in my area sets up a benching session like they did in Michigan...so I can go and learn :)

your voltages and mem timings seem okay. Try using realtemp to monitor temps.

I personally prefer realtemp. Namely due to the fact Everest has a lot of overhead (it can eat up cpu cycles big time). Realtemp is even nicer if you have a Nvidia gpu as it has support for their thermal monitors so you can display both you gpu temp and cpu temps in the system tray. The min and max temp logging with time stamping is also quite handy.

Nice first attempt by the way :up: I'm assuming you've left both turbo and HT on?

btw, since you have an i7 860, can you run benchwell with ht on and off and report the results? I want to get an i7 860, but am not sure if ht will benefit maxwell render.

RealTemp 3.30 RC11 should support this new CPU.

It shouldn't be much different than E-LEET but not all utilities correctly read data from all 4 cores and use the correct TJMax so who knows. Core Temp handles these correctly too.

heh I do. I'm trying to push it over 4.2 now since I have my V10 on it but everytime I go higher, I get a crash in wPrime 32m. Any Ideas?

I even dropped my memory down to 615Mhz 10-10-10-26 and I still can't push any higher without a crash in wPrime.

CPU PLL looks too much , afaik. Big voltages is much more bad , than too low volts.

wprime is not a memory related crash usually

leave CPU PLL at auto and try more vcore ....Do you really need that much VTT?!?

also watch your temps....possible reason for wpime crash

i'd be pretty happy with 4.2Ghz to be honest and try to now get it stable with lower volts :up:

K put the pll back to auto. Dropped the VTT back down to 1.4. Temps aren't the concern I have a V10 on it and an A/C vent turned on high right above it :)

Ya 4.2 is good but I'm trying to see how high I can push this one seeing as its not my daily driver.

How are your temps and stability now that you pulled back on the volts? It's actually interesting to see what it can do at 4.2ghz. Try to fine tune settings there and work on getting stability and better efficiency. Run some more benches and people will eat it up. Then go up with freq once you get your dice pot.

Ya I dropped the VTT down to 1.4 and raised the vcore up and I was able to get it up to 4.4 but then it just seemed to hit a wall. I think it needs more vcore but any more and my V10 would cry for mercy.

Now I really want to get a DICE pot to see how high I can get it :)

Until then just see how stable, cool and efficient you can get the setup at 4-4.2ghz. I know I'd like to see that at least.

How far you were able to push the i860 on stock voltage? With all the Intel technologies enabled, TurboBoost and HT...
Thinking on getting this one...
