Just like the title says is anyone running their WD velociraptor without the icepak? If so what do you have cooling it?

Thanks,
Eddie

Enterprise editions without icepak are being sold on ebay every once in a while.
I would say if you have one right in front of the fan it should be fine.
You could even suspend it in air with thick rubber bands and the fan could hit the top and bottom and cut vibration noise too.

I reckon they should be fine without ice-pack - Seagate sell 10Krpm & 15Krpm 2.5" drives without any 'ice-pack'

Apparently it is quieter without than with. Go figure...

When they first came out I read a review claiming 5c cooler with the "icepac" than without.

WD just sent me a 150GB VR to replace a failed 150GB raptor....cha-ching :)

 oooo.. soo tempting :yepp:
was it 'normal' 150GB Raptor or the RaptorX (with window)..

I have 2x Raptor X.. both work fine tho.. been thinking about picking up a third for some RAID0 fun :)

It was a plain 150 raptor....I have 3 more of those as well as an X. I'll likely give them to my three sons.

SPCR (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article844-page1.html). The drives don't need them, and become a lot quiter without them. Only really included to make the disc a standard 3.5" size.

i have a 300GB version, and i odn't even know wth an ice pak is. I just have a 120mm fan right in front of it, and it stays around 29 c - 32 c.

Interesting.
Wonder if it would work in a laptop without the icepack?

Just don't overcool your drives. If they are under 40c then they are WORSE off.

i have seen a diff revision of the ice pack in local stores which cant be removed.. . the sata connectors are on the ice pack rather than on the drive. there are soldered pins that connect the two and i didn't see a sata connector on the drive. i maybe be wrong though.

Wouldn't count on it. They're thicker than the standard 2.5" laptop form factor.

not a chance: laptop HDDs run of 5V only are so are supplied 5V only.. V-Raptor still needs 5V *& 12V* line ;)

Plus it wouldn't physically fit - as pointed out above ;)

I've never checked physical size.. clearly its 2.5" across.. how deep & thick is it?

edit: just checked WD website - its 15mm thick vs standard 9mm :)

Running my VelociRaptor 300 gig with the rest of my drives that sit directly behind the Rad and it runs at the same temp. as the 7200 rpm drives.
Who say's they need extra cooling?
All seven of my drives are running between 34 and 37c, and on a hot system will run up to 45c. Seems to me that is plenty cool enough for any drive.

Mine has an adapter fastened to the icepak. The hd itself has the normal connections plugged into the adapter.
So if the hd were removed from the icepak it would connect to sata and power cables normally.
