As per thread title.
Is this possible, without losing the data on my system, or would I have to do a clean install?

There is an easier way.
Explore the dvd and find the primary exe file.
Right click (run as administrator) on it and under install/upgrade properties select upgrade from vista sp2, then apply.
You should be able to upgrade now.
That is how I did it a while ago so the steps above might not be that exact but you should be able to figure it out.

rtm is what will be released on disc
technet, msdn/msdnaa subscribers get it
basically you legally own it they just havent shoved the discs out the door yet
you could use 'another' copy and put in the key you get when you buy it up to 120 days later.
