Red hot? You gotta show us the photo of it
I'd say something is terrible wrong with it, perhaps with the run cap or the motor coil.

Those temps aren't that bad, my 3/4hp runs at that after about 3hours work and doesn't get any higher. When I asked if it was too high I was told not to worry. However if you want to cool it down, maybe put a fan or two to blow on it?

60°C isn't too much for a rotary compressor, you shouldn't be worrying about that. But, as the fellow fatguy1992 suggested you may:

rotaries run right around 60c. I have read they are fine till 80c, as a general guideline.

thanks for the input guys.

as always, the quick response is much appreciated

Find the spec sheet of your compressor. There are maximum temperature values in the spec files, you'd be surprised with the temps a rotary can handle. Remember, the top of the shell of the rotary is expose to the discharge side of the system, so the shell temps are close to your discharge temps.

if its to hot then the thremal trip will cut the comp out :yepp:

but id say for hermetric comp 80c is the border line after that it pumps to much heat in to the condencer lowering poformance

Reciprocating shell temps are also influenced by the suction line, hence why reciprocating shell temps SHOULD be colder. The panasonic rotaries I've been using have max case temps at 125 Celsius I believe, the routinely run between 75C and 90C depending on the load and they run happy as a pig in crap.

That is ''cold'' for rotary it it's under load. :)
