I haven't had much time to deal with tech issues lately- hence my long period of absence from the site, but I guess troubles don't come at a time of our choosing.
I built this rig back in the summer of 2008 (specs in sig),and after the first few months I knew the power supply was holding my overclock back. (I had been running it with the fan completely blocked and it was burning up) However, due to lack of funds and generally unsupportive parents, I flipped the PSU over lived with it and just used my system as it was. It was running fine and I had no reason to believe that a 650W Corsair -even slightly damaged could not support a 3.6GHz Q6600 and a 9800GX2 @ 730MHz Core. Recently, I'd been noticing that my CPU temps were getting a little out of hand due to dust buildup (45C idle), but due to my lack of intensive usage they never went above the mid 60s. However, today, in the middle of watching an episode of K-On!, my comp shuts down. At first, I thought it was a power outage, or a crash, but then I realize that the lamp in my room was still on. I was about to press the power button to boot up again, but I stopped immediately as I started to hear small cracking and popping sounds coming from the case. Shortly after, it starts to smell of burning plastic and other toxic fumes, so I run out and shut the door.
I'm about 99% sure that it's the power supply, but I'm surprised it would give out under such lightweight computing tasks.
Any suggestions as to safe and cheap ways out of this mess?
Interestingly enough, my emachines which was my supposed backup, refuses to start atm (probably power supply also).
The only thing that is usuable right now is my EEE PC.
