my hard drive is currently running on an old AMD system and has a lot of programs that i can no longer install if i were to wipe it clean. i want to upgrade to an intel platform using this same hard drive, so how can i keep all the applications on there without formatting and reinstalling everything?
first step is to uninstall all the mobo drivers, but the hardware signature during XP installation would not be the same. anyone know of a way to get around this?

Shrink the partition, create a new one, and then do a clean install on that partition. It's not an elegant or efficient solution, but it will definitely work.

so you mean leave the current AMD OS on it, do a clean install on the intel platform with the same drive and name the new partition the C drive? i suppose this will work, but then i won't be able to find these programs in the start button. would there be a problem launching these programs if they were in the D partition, but the OS is on the C partition? my brother plays games like starcraft and counterstrike on this rig, so would that be a problem?

Try driver sweeper to get rid of all drivers, then install HDD in new rig. The 2 times ive used this method it worked well both times, but do backup any important data b4 u try.

both times you've tried, was it going from intel to AMD or vise versa, or was it from the same platforms but different mobos? i may give this a try and report back.

Yes one was AMD X2 AM2 to Intel E5200, the other was Nvidia 6100 chipset to a AMD 780G mb with my AMD X2

I've used this guide successfully in the past, except it's really old, and the pictures are gone... they were useful, too. Maybe you can find an old copy on archive.org... I haven't used it in a few years, but I can't see much having changed between SP2/3...

Microsoft's File and Settings Transfer wizard works for this purpose as well.

The drive letters Windows assigns (C:, D:, etc..) are logical only, meaning they aren't linked to a physical drive/partition. Your current C: drive will be your new D: drive after a reinstall.
Just thought I would clear that up. There is alot of mis-information concerning that.
