View Full Version : What can be done with this monster?

My father just gave me a brand new 2-ton rated wall A/C unit. This thing is big. I would love to use if for cooling, but I really have no idea if it is just too large to be feasible. Was going to use it on a Deneb 965.

Apparently it is about 10 years old, but didn't end up getting used so it's like a new unit (I hope it still runs like one anyway). I'm sure there needs to be some maintenance performed from sitting for some long.

All I have are some details on the model, and some model numbers from the compressor. If anyone can give me suggestions on what to do with this it would be great. It is a 220V model and I have a 220V outlet under my desk.

Sticker says Whirlpool model: X24004A0. Front dial area says Roper. I have no idea what refrigerant is used because I couldn't find it listed anywhere on the unit, so I will have to call the company next week.

The only other details I could find were located on the compressor sticker. The sticker read:

MFG: Bristol
Model H25B6QABCD
Part# 706721-25-1324

Any thoughts on possible duty cycles it could handle, or if it is worth the attempt at using for CPU cooling?

Here are two side photos with a pop can for scale:

I am from Northern Illinois and I would be willing to drive this to an experienced builder to get the job done right. I would prefer setting this up to run at least a 12hr duty cycle if that is possible, and get temps as low as they can be while achieving this; again, if possible. Noise is not a real factor.

Thanks

You sure wont get an energy star for this guy:):). If you dont have a problem with energy consuption or noise (or size for that matter). You could do whatever withit. course if your gunna have someone do it, might as well do it right and use the more responsibly sized parts

So no matter what, it is just too big to make good use of? Is there anyway this could be used for something like a cascade stage? The thing was free, I just want to use it! ;)

Maybe instead, use it for two PCs at once.

sure its big enough for like a water cooler that cools a whole rendering farm lol (maybe exagerating). you can do whatever with it triple evap, super chiller, autocascade guy, great 1st stage cascade. its just......big:confused:

Well, what do you recommend I do? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg adding to it, but would like to get some very low temps by minor mods if possible.

I just found a Bristol model numbering spec page: http://www.bristolc.com.au/Portals/0/Images/CompressorNumbering.JPG

It uses R22 currently. Says it's an Inertia Series. Then it is a reciprocating type. 26,000BTU in "quiet mode". Motor type is PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor). Internal line break motor protector. 208-230V single phase 60Hz.

That pretty much sums it up from the specs I can find.

what did it come out of?

what did it come out of?

A dusty back room of a laundrymat. :ROTF:

It came out of a Roper wall A/C unit by Whirlpool. I slid it out of the case to take pictures. Apparently Roper is an A/C lineup which used to be put out by Whirlpool. I can't find any A/C units stating "Roper" on them now.

I just found another 220V A/C unit someone set in our back alley, obviously abandoned. It is smaller but still very large, maybe 16,000BTU or around there. I'm going to grab the truck today and take it home. I just took down the model on the compressor (getting ready to see if I can find info on it)...have to see why they ditched the unit, but I'm sure many parts are usable for a build.

OK, now someone also told me with a reciprocating compressor, don't even bother. Can anyone explain why that compressor type is a bad choice?

Most the compressors on here are reciprocating mate. It just means it's piston based, not like a rotary which is different somehow.

I was told this would make a nice stage 1 for a cascade. ;)

I'm looking forward to hearing more ideas. I grabbed that other abandoned unit already and will try testing it later or tomorrow to see why it was ditched.

I'm becoming addicted to phase cooling already, and yet I have no idea what I'm doing yet. I am mechanically inclined, but have a lot to learn along this road. I appreciate the help and suggestions.
