I wanna do a small upgrade from my current Q6600 to a Core i7. I just need the CPU, mobo, memory, HD and need some advices from you guys.
- CPU: Core i7 920
- Mobo: I have 2 options: either the Asus P6T (regular version) or the Gigabyte Extreme. Which one should I go for? And is it true that I can still use my TRUE with 775 bracket on the P6T?
- Memory: I need a good 6GB set and I've been looking at the G.Skill and OCZ:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227381
What the difference between the OCZ Gold and Platinum besides the timing?
- HD: I'm thinking of SSD but due to its cost, I probably need a good 1TB HD. Any recommendations?
I'm looking to OC to at least 4.0Ghz on this new setup so any suggestions are appreciated.

go with p6t, no need for a extreme gigabyte when you use aircooling.
yes heat sinks for s775 will fit to p6t
go with ocz platinum hard to possible that you will achive same timings as a platinum with gskil set, or more MHz or whait for this - ocz reaper 1800 cl8 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227417). but as you will not pushing your cpu very hard just go with platinum.
hard drive. samsung f2eg or wait for a F3

So the P6T is a better option than the Gigabyte considering they have the same price? For memory, you're saying the OCZ Reaper would be a better choice than the Platinum or G.Skill? And I notice the Samsung F2 only spins at 5400RPM, does that make it slower to the 7200RPM counterpart? I would like to get maybe not the fastest but one that give me best performance for the buck if possible.

ive had 2 asus p6t v2 and they are the worst mb ive ever had for a new machine and they aint that cheap...they both topped out my 920 d0 at 3.6 on water.. blck would not go over 180 no matter what i did. now i run with evga classified, and WOW 4.0 ghz with only a little more vcore.. and much more with more tweaks. work some extra hours and get a realy nice MB instead, just me 2 cents..
realy i cant recommend the p6t v2 (isnt the main deference only the sas controller?)..

yes p6t, if it is standard p6t non deluxe non ws pro or se, just a p6t. or if you want to have a gigabyte board wait for sales before ex58A family will arrive.
well as much as i know reapers should do very well. 5 bucks more than a ocz gold but faster, from a standard. in those ocz there is a lack of a "A" in a product number. and they are not as good as reapers in comparism price/performance factors.
samsung f2eg i few words. cold, silent, cheap, with enough speed. you know what? in stead of one 1tb buy two 500gb to raid0. that should speed up your stuff :)

Wait for the P55 motherboards to arrive before making your decision.

What do you use this computer for ? Because unless you are doing hard-core processing (folding/benchmarking) you will see more of a speed increase from a user standpoint by just upgrading to an SSD.

It's the Asus P6T standard and I think that's the only one you can use a 775 cooler. By the way, I can get either this board or the Gigabyte EX58 Extreme for the same price, that's why I'm in a dilemma. As for memory I'll get the OCZ Reaper then.
I'm not a big fan of RAID so I'd rather get one HD with good performance.
@perkam: I keep up with the news frequently and as my standpoint, I think it doesn't make a difference if I wait for P55 line up. Considering the Core i5 750 costs 5 bucks more than the Core i7 920 :D and without HT, I don't think I would jump on that. Same thing for Core i7 860 and 870, I saw the 860 at Fry's for $289 and compare clock to clock with the 920, I still lean toward the 920 since it's cheaper. As for P55 mobo, I know the price is affordable but I can get the Asus P6T or Gigabyte Extreme for around $200 so I think I should pull the trigger. That's the reason why I want such upgrade and unless you can convince me why I should hold on. :D
@3Z3ZH: I'm gonna use it mainly for gaming and I'm thinking going into folding, crunching as well. Speaking of SSD, would you guys recommend the SuperTalent 64GB on sale on newegg for $140? I would grab one along with a Samsung F2. Is it a good SSD for the money or is there something else I should consider? I would like to keep it under $150. :D

It's out of stock and I need at least 64GB. :D Actually I'm waiting for a deal from my friend that can get me a OCZ or Crucial 128GB for around $200. Still decide which board I'm gonna get.

Too bad I won't be able to use water cooling or LN2 so I guess I won't get the most out of this board. But then I can always consider the Asus P6T. :D

It's interesting to me that you want i7 while owning a q6600.
I own one I degraded from 3.78ghz to 3.6 ghz and it's overkill for gaming.
I used to fold and I would say go gpu, no CPU since you'll be wasting a lot of power on wu's that aren't worth much.
With i9 around the corner, why go i7 if you have the intent to fold? i9 would help, so hold out.
If you only game, why not get the evga micro atx. It'll push an i920 as far as a classified from what I've read. You can save some cash that way and not compromise any power.

Thanks for the suggestion, but like I said since I only do a small upgrade, I don't really spend a lot of money on this. I get a pretty good deal on both CPU and mobo and DDR3 RAM price is on the cheap, that's why I decided to pull the trigger.
I know Core i9 is around the corner but I don't think it would make a big difference considering we don't have many apps or games fully take advantage of 4 cores or more so just like the Gulftown, I recently read a review compare to Nehalem and the review points out it would be a waste of CPU power. Plus you gotto pay a lot more for their flagship too since I think Intel will release Core i9 for extreme and high end desktop first before releasing one for the mainstream.
