Windows 2K8: Impressions?

I can get any version of windows free through my job. I have an iso image for Server 2k8 and wanted some opintions on it before installing it.

If I want to use this instead of vista ultimate, is this more of an upgrade performance wise, or would I just simply be losing a lot of functionaltiy.

I ran server 2003 for a while and had very few issues, other than in games. Some just wouldn't work.

Server 2008 once you do the workstation conversion runs basically just like Vista. I haven't been bothered by any of the functionality loss.

All my games have worked fine.

It might be a little last to ask this since win7 is coming out. I'm guessing server 2K10/11 later?

If you can get them for free from work (I am assuming from a TechNet account) then why not just give it a try yourself ? The worst thing that happens is you gain working knowledge of another OS. :shrug:

server08 r2 is the windows 7 server and it may be a free upgrade as there no price for anything yet and it was rumored to be free for server 08 users.

the only thing that u need for gaming and other apps, if u need to install something complex or that mods windows files like a driver, securom game, or solidworks, ext, u need to use the administrator account.

Don't count on Server 2008 R2 being a freebie upgrade. Both are good OSes, however. I've ran both for extensive periods. (RC for R2)

i think that there would be a backlash server08 isnt even a year old, and they promised backing up exchange14 databases with server 08 and thats only in r2 so far

and im fine with reinstalling every 240 days if i cant use my server08 keys with r2
