So I just decided to join and had a few questions.
First - Has anyone had any major problems with this? I'm thinking about installing it on my School laptop (GTX 260M) and wanted to make sure it would be stable and everything. (Regardless of stability I should have another GTX 260 up by the end of the week. Depending on Newegg delivery time...)
Second - What's that max stable temp for the two cards above?
Edit: Also, I just downloaded "NVIDIA Notebook Driver for Windows Vista 64-bit 185.85" - hope that's the right one?
And the GPUgrid site says I need Bionic 6.5.0 but I'm using 6.2.28. Will upgrading it lose the WUs I have for WCG? 6.5.0 isn't supported by WCG, are there any problems associated with it?

Also, when I tried to install the CUDA 2.2 thing, it said I was trying to run a 64 bit instal on a machine that wasn't 64 Bit Vista/Win 7... but I'm sure that's what I have.

Ok, so I've been trying over and over for the past 3 days. Here are some screenshots. Anyone know whats going wrong?
64 bit right?

This (http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista64_186.03_whql.html) is the driver that looks like the correct one.
You should get a newer version of BOINC here (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D) since they have better GPU support. I'm running this (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.6.38_windows_x86_64.exe) one on WinXP64 and Vista64.

Hey Paladin, thanks for the response! But that's the driver I have been trying. I retried just to make sure and it gave me the same error as above... But I'll download the new Bionic for now. It doesn't cause any problems for WCG does it?

None, my rigs (http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=userbycpid&cpid=1ceaf70207c848b31a06cd70e3b503a9) are currently running GPUGRID and WCG at the same time.
Here's (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R226274&SystemID=ALW_LP_M17X&servicetag=&os=WV64&osl=en&deviceid=21728&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=6&fileid=324207) Dell/Alienware's 260M driver v186.12. If that still doesn't work, I'd edit the .inf to change the 250M listed to a 260M then use Update Driver from the Device Manager and manually select the directory with the driver.

laptop videotogo may be your solution... http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers
dl the driver and expand it.
then dl the modded inf into the expanded files.
then run setup.
if that doesn't work, you may need to run a driver cleaner to clean all the old attempts off the machine. http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-(Setup)_d1655.html

Ok, I'll give that a try in just a little bit. And BTW - good job blowing by me today in WCG. I could feel the wind. :ROTF:
Edit: It worked. Now have 185.66 and getting Cuda 2.2 as we speak!

So... new problem
I have the driver now, but i can't install cuda... it still does what's in the last pic above
MikeB12
08-02-2009, 04:59 AM
cuda is included in the driver. you dont have to install cuda, it's part of the driver.
if the driver wont install, then run hat driver sweeper first.
if you got the driver to install, go ahead and try to add gpugrid to the boinc manager project list. make sure "use gpu" is checked in your boinc manager.
it should work on that gpu - 260M.. it's green in the gpugrid list http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=867#11237

Yay! It's working!
Thanks for all the help guys!
Just one last question - what's a safe max temp for the gpu? It's been running for just about 5-10 minutes now and it seems to be leveling off around 85C
Is that safe?!? - suspending it till i know for sure.
Naja002
08-02-2009, 09:25 AM
People run them at that temp, so, yes, it's "safe". Personally, I would tweak it down some though, but that's just me....
Otis11
08-02-2009, 09:31 AM
So if i let it run for about an hour, it settles in at about 90C... in a room thats 75F... that can't be right...?!?!?!
Edit: thanks Naja - just saw your post. Apparently Nvidia says the max stable is 105c here (http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_260_us.html)
Does that hold up for the Mobile series?
And how do i tweak just the GPU setting without turning down my cpu settings (which are at a perfectly comfortable 52 at 100%)
Naja002
08-02-2009, 09:32 AM
is it OCed?
Otis11
08-02-2009, 09:44 AM
Wow, ok so a twist in events... My card peaked just over 90C and the fan speed kicked up to bring it down to low 80s... what's a good program/way to allow me to turn the fan up like this normally? (FanSpeed doesn't work on this computer for the fans, but does temps fine)
No it is not overclocked at all. Unfortunately this is my school computer so I'm not going to OC any part for stability reasons.
Oh and while you're here, naja, what do you like to keep your cards around. Just as a frame of reference?
Naja002
08-02-2009, 09:50 AM
RT=Rivatuner 2.24
Then you will probably have to force the driver and force 3D performance (which you should do anyway) =

Go to where you adjust the OC....there's a Fan tab. There's no reason to be shy of that one.

Hey, naja - thank for all the help. ;)
Strange. At the top of mine it says: "Rivatuner (driver emulation mode)"
Under driver settings is says: "No supported drivers detected for this display adapterCustomize..." Your's says: "Forceware detected". (???)
Underneath: Mine is blank. Your's is showing files. What driver are you using?
When I go to Overclocking I have 4 tabs: Overclocking, Fan, Compatibility, Overlay
Check the "about" tab and make sure you have 2.24.

Yes it's version 2.24 and i'm running driver 195.66 for my graphics card. Does anyone know the lifespan of the card if it stays at 90C crunching? If it'll last around 4 years I'll be more than happy with those temps and just say w/e. Otherwise I really need to find a way to cool this down a bit...
And actually in all honestly I'd like a good program to just put fan speed up a bunch... But idk is it just me? how would I fix RT? I downloaded Precision but it won't let me change the fan speed. It's on auto and Idk how to fix it.
I just read through all of your sig links - I'm just speechless. I'd read some before, but just realized that the same person did all of those mods and that just totally blew my mind...
Now i'm really trying to figure out if I should call docter sig for you or bow in humble admiration...

Not sure why you are having issues. What brand is the card? I have one that allows almost not adjustments and I have to use RT hardware monitor just to get temps from it--nothing else works.

Well, I know it's cooled by the cpu fan because I've watched it hit 90C+, heard the fan spin up and it dropped to low 80s... so I'd really like to just spin up the fan myself, but yeah, you're right. I might just have to get a notebook cooler.
BTW is GPUGrid out of WU's? I got my i7 up with a GTX 260 and i'm getting this:

I think MM said there is a setting called "no new tasks" that will accomplish that.

Exciting news! I bought all the parts for my computer at MicroCenter last saturday, and after setting everything up i found they had given me a GTX 260 (192) when I had asked for a 216 core, so i brought it back to see what they would do. I looked at the prices (got the 192 for $159 after rebate) and they had the 216 priced at $240- and thought, well that stinks. But i decided there was no harm in asking - so I explained what happened to the manager, and since the employee had told me it was a 216 when i asked they decided to honor it.
Basically - MicroCenter ended up giving me a 216 Superclocked for $159 in the name of customer service and their employees word. Made me really happy.
And thanks for the reply Mike, I'm shutting down the rig for a week while I'm at a wedding, but I'll try toggling with that when i get back! Happy crunching all!

Apologies, but I don't know much about laptops. I've always built desktops.
I think MM said there is a setting called "no new tasks" that will accomplish that.
"No new tasks" will work, but requires babysitting over the long haul. Even then it will not "regulate" the number of WUs DLed. It will just prevent more work from coming in. ATM Boinc Gpu is not advanced enough to allow the user to select the number of WUs DLed (working, in queue, etc)...that is set by the project. For Gpugrid it is generally 2/gpu (although last weekend it was changed to 1/gpu and then changed back). Aqua was allowing 1/gpu recently. Etc.
The Boinc Cpu allows some regulation through the "additional work buffer"....not really sure what the hold up is on adding something like that to the Gpu side of things--but it would be a nice feature.
Apologies, folks, just been busy with my chiller project, work, life, et al....

Just leave them on F@H like I did. The teams numbers are really down and they need the points. Unless heat is the issue then ya gotta do what ya gotta do. One day last week I had to stop folding as it was getting over 80 in my room. It is the sunny days that hurt me. Sunny all day in the 90s and I am cooking. Not enough insulation in attic.

Ok, so overclocking noob here. I was talking about my graphics card in my laptop, and decided i think i'm going to try to underclock it to keep the temps down and still be able to run GPUGrid 24/7. (Is that a bad idea? otherwise i'm not comfortable running it at all because of the temps. But desktop running it either way.)
It looks like in Precision, the shader clock is twice the core clock, so I have that locked, but is there any relationship between those two and the memory clock? It looks kinda random. (core/shader/mem - 383/766/301) what should I know before trying this? and is there anyway to get them to apply at startup?
Thanks for the help!
PG - I know what you mean. Seems really cool (litterally - haha bad joke) but I don't know how well i'd sleep with water in my computer...
Edit: Actually, when i start GPUGrid, the clocks jump to (540/1350/799) and whatever I set in Precision has no effect on what it actually runs at...

Under Advanced > Preference > Processor Usage put in something less than 100% for % of CPU usage. Try like 60% and watch temps and go from there.

Ok PG - so I tried that and it dropped my cpu temps, but they were already within a comfortable range. I'm worried about the gpu being in the low 90s and it didn't make a difference for that. Is there a way to set GPU usage to say 70% or so?!?

....Sorry to sound like a concerned parent here, but, I've been following this thread thinking, why risk the laptop at all? You said in your opening post that it was your school rig. You have other rigs that are more appropriate and less risky. I would ask, if you lose the lappy, what happens to your school work ability?
And yes, I recognize that you have caught the cruncher disease. I have had it bad for a while. I used to crunch the crap out of my work lappy. I had to ask myself, if it died, would that have an effect on my ability to afford the power bills I pay every month? You bet it would.... I quit doing it.
Don't get me wrong. I would crunch the toaster and the washing machine if I could load BOINC on them. ....But I can live without toast or clean clothes if needed...:ROTF:

But in all seriousness, that's what i've been doing. I've been downloading a GPUGrid WU every now and then and working on keeping the temps down, but have yet to figure out how. Thinking I might have to leave this to my desktop. What can you do?

Yeah, that's why I'll probably remove GPUGrid from the lappy once school starts, but for now I still have a week to play around with it. If anything goes wrong I have a little time to fix it. But while GPUGrid will be limited to my desktop, I'm really quite comfortable with WCG on the laptop. Stays at or below 50C as long as its in an airconditioned room, so I don't really see a reason to stop that.
Just as a note - I actually got my desktop specifically for this. So i can get into OCing, and run both WCG and GPUGrid with no worries and no consequence. WCG isn't going anywhere, but seems like GPUGrid is going to have to be restained.
Thanks for all the feedback guys, I'm staying with the team, but looks like b/c the risk factor it's best if i cut back for a bit. I'll keep adding when I get the opportunity!
