View Full Version : Got the P4 up and runnin but...

I have no bleeeeping clue on how to oc this thing ! This bios is so cunfuzing. So many settings and it took me about 1/2 an hour just to find my way around the familiar settings. Gotta hand it to you P4 gurus, i'd get lost in there. Ok this is what i have:

Asus P4C800 Deluxe (bios 1013)
P4 2.6C
2x256MB PC3200 Twinmos BH-5
2-100GB wd HDD in Raid-0
Highpoint RocketRaid ATA133 pci card
Visiontek GF4 Ti4600 Modded
TTGI 520w Psu
Stock cpu cooler and got a 40mm coolermaster fan on the NB. ( been a long time since i've air cooled, lol)

Cpu temps are 27c runnin all default and stock.

Ok, now what do i do here? I'm gonna need the A-B-C's on this. It's my first P4 rig so bear with me. I've been AMD since forever.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

To me my P4C800 Dulxe is easyer to OC than my nf2 rig.

If you need help with settings I'll be glad to walk you through the BIOS.

But first I just want to make sure you know theise new Northwoods and High vcore dont go to well togather :)

You want to first find out how high a fsb your 2.6 can reach on default vcore with mem set to 3:4 ratio and slack timings, compaired to AMD you might be suprised.

+ the P4C800 Deluxe overvolts vcore a little.

DDR Frequency
400 = 1:1
320 = 5:4
266 = 3:2

That's pretty much all you need to know that may be different from your AMD.

Also don't even bother looking at the reported temps, they are ~8-12c lower than they really are (tested with my probe on the back of the CPU).

OK exactly what are you haveing trouble with ??

The BIOS memory timings are just about the same as an AMD rig
your Corsair should easly hold cas 2-3-3-5 at default FSB with ratio set to 400 which =1:1 or 200mhz for memory bus.

Well i see the FSB is locked @ 200 and i can't change it. Now the ram timings i'm kinda familiar with except for the order they're in and extra settings. The rest is just a cunfuzing mess.

Use the +/- keys to change that FSB ;).

Ok tanx soul .with the help climbski ( which explained it to my like i was 6 y/o  ) I managed to set this :

Cpu speed: 3Ghz 1.6vcore
Dram freq. 3:2 (266)
Agp Voltage-1.7

FSB is 230 and evrything else is default ; ram timings, vdimm, and whatever else like the performance thingy etc.

now what else do I do? So far i know a little about some settings.

Cpu speed: 3Ghz 1.6vcore
Dram freq. 3:2 (266)

.........do you want your ram at 153 MHZ?...........

DIVIDERS EXPLAINED:

........its the speed your ram runs........1:1=same speed as the fsb, 200fsb=200Mhz..........5:4 = 5 divide by the fsb then 4 times that = your ddr MHZ, 200fsb = 160Mhz......3:2 = 3 divided by the fsb then 2 times = your ddr MHZ, 200fsb = 133Mhz.........

Nebulous

Well no, but climbski suggested i set it there to make sure my ram was a bottleneck.

Ok a little more tweaking:

Dram freq: 5:4
FSB 235
Timings: 2-3-3-7-4
Cpu speed: 3054Mhz

*edit*
FSB 240
Cpu speed: 3117Mhz

Cpu temps: 32c

........make sure to disable Legacy USB. It can cause alot of problems when overclocking..........

I have played with Spread Spectrum during overclocking, and it made NO difference in stability, not even at 295fsb. It also made no difference in speed (3DM01 scored the same on/off).

I also played with that DRAM Refresh Rate on all of the different settings with no difference in speed or stability.

I run it Turbo-2-2-2-5-4-Enabled-Auto-Auto as do most others but I have SS and ICH Delayed Transaction Enabled.

Glad you got it working there...Idea on the 3:2 divider was to find your max CPU OC first then work on increasing the mem speed:toast:

Nebulous
11-21-2003, 11:08 PM
Well this is it for now:

Cpu speed : 3315Mhz
5:4 ratio
2-2-2-7-4 Turbo
FSB @ 255

Vcore @ 1.6v and vdimm @ 2.85v Cpu temps are 30c

Not bad at all!

Tanx climbski, soul and all you guyz for having patience with me :toast:

Well I dropped the vcore and the vagp to default leaving only the vdimm @ 2.85v. So far she's still runnin like a champ.

I might just drop the vdimm too.

Nebulous
11-23-2003, 12:06 PM
Looks like i dropped the vdimm too far back and got a crash. Had to clear cmos via jumper and reset evrything.

Vcore- Auto( default)
Vagp-1.5v
Vdimm- 2.75v

Runnin the same speed again with no crashes. Freakin' awsome board !

3.45Ghz @ default vcore is great :D

Not for me. Even at 295fsb it does nothing but make my system slower (lobby framerates drop) so I leave it at 1.5v.

Well mine has the stock ASUS heatsink on the NB and I haven't touched it 1 bit, maybe its getting too hot when the voltage goes up.

I have a thermaltake tiger on my NB, highly recommended.

Slickthellama
11-23-2003, 08:30 PM
frankly, i dont see how increasing the voltage going thru a NB could help, wouldn't that just generate excessive heat? And my friend burned up an AGP slot at 1.7v. So frankly, i dont see that it is worth it, but i could be wrong.

.....once before this topic came up here and there were some guys that said the same as you but others have stated they run there like that for long periods, like myself, and have had no such issues. I don't know if it does or does not hurt the AGP slot but you are right about it generating more heat through the N/B.....

The power is there, but it's stability (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23221) I'm struggling with. :(

I did nearly crap my pants when I saw the memory bandwidth at stock CPU clock 2-2-2-5 though. :D

I know that running the agp V @ 1.7 is recommended by ATI to cure stuttering in games. Hey D how's that Pent going for you? The main thing I noticed between mine and the 2500 was how fast it ran games/apps. The Bios was a bit disturbing at first but you get the hang of it rather quickly. Everyone would tell me to ramp the fsb when I asked for help, but it didn't explain all the other settings. I'm gonna try Macci's droop mod when I get back home next week.

Koolness! I've had zero peoblems with the pent setup. She's runnin like a hooker on a naval base on payday, like a champ! :D
I'll be H20-ing soon. Prommie's taking a back seat since my grandson came along. I'm thinking I really don't need the prommie on an intel anyways. These babies run alot cooler than the AMD's since they need less vcore. My next step up is a vid card. Even tho my 4600 does really good in games, i think it's only right to complete the upgrade process ;)

Keep me posted on the mod and good luck! :toast:

That's great to hear. My 4600 runs good too but upgrading to a 9800 was a great move. I can run most games maxed out @ 1600x1200. I still run 1280x1024 on multi to help pick up the frags. Yo I picked you up a Bolivar Cuban :D I'll ship it out Monday when I get home. I'll do pics of the mod too. I just hate having to break everything down to do it.

Hmm, looks like the right move for me is 9800 pro ;) You think the guyz over @ SG will freak?  I'm looking at cost plus performance/results and the 9800 pro is the way to go. If i can't beat 'em, might as well join 'em :rotf:
