Hey guys
i wasn't sure where to post this but i got a problem

i had my e8400+asus p5e sitting in my closet for a few months and i went to fire it up last night but no workie, check everything, mobo seems good, it powers up but i can't get anything on the screen.

i thought maybe reseating the cpu would help but i think i found my problem

How would you guys remove that?
i tried to scrape the contacts and it seems to work but can i broke anything by scraping it?

the pics are not really good, i'll try to get better shot after i ate

it's only on the upper part of the cpu on the pics i took, all the brownish spot you see are infact dark brown in reality

Try some 91% Isopropyl alcohol and if that doesn't work try wd-40 to break it off the cpu.

Looks like someone removed the water off it and it perhaps and a small drip and ran into the socket. What does the lga socket pins look like is it also rusted like that?

Looks more like corrosion than rust. Try the classic cleaner for that consisting of baking soda and water. Make a thick pasty solution of it and let the contacts soak for a few minutes, then remove and continue cleaning. If it's run of the mill corrosion, you should be back in business.

Also might try an old tooth brush.

that wasn't long, i'm back

i vigorously cleaned it with a sponge and it remove lots of it, but there's an area where it's looks more affected

since i got no Isopropyl alcohol, i went the soda route, it's soaking right now...i feel like a coke dealer :)

those who wonder what happened, i really don't know it was in the basement so it's really damp down there. I left it into the motherboard socket, i'm sure if it was removed prior storing it wouldn't never happened.

I'm just happy the mobo got the pins not the CPU, much easier to work on the cpu
after cleaning it another time i'll take a pic and try to fire it up...fingers crossed!

they appears to be clean, they all shine, but i gently scraped them with a razor blade to be sure

i've remonted the true and i'm powering the i7 because my second PSU is not arrived yet

it's alive!!!!

pic of the cpu before i tried it
flash/no flash

i had to use a razor blade to clean the worst part, there was a rather thick layer. I just circled on the contact until i saw some metal
then i wiggled the cpu in the mobo socket a bit and closed/open the socket a few times.

I jus love a story with a happy ending. When i was lapping me e6400 i dropped it and severley damaged a corner. Cus it was damp from lapping process and it landed on its corner on tiles, it dented all the way to a contact. Bent back into shape and it still works. Hardy little buggers these chips are :D

lol postal_dude

CPUs are really tough, they look fragile but they can suffer a lot :)

Sorry for bumping the thread after the problem's been solved but I just have to ask... How can a CPU corrode?! What he's shown on the pics looked like iron rust - wasn't the contact spots supposed to be copper/gold?
