Hello All,

I am going to be upgrading from my E8500 to the quad core Q9650. It should be here in a couple of days. (17 July)

Is there anything special that I have to know prior to dropping my chip in the socket.

I am running Vista 64Bit Ultimate. Here are the steps I am thinking of. Please let me know if I am doing something incorrect or if I am missing items. My system is in my signature.

1. Reset BIOS and LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS
2. Boot into Windows
3. Shut Down
4. Unplug all power from the computer and shut off PSU
5. Remove CPU heatsink and take E8500 out very carefully!
6. Replace with Q9650
7. Reinstall CPU heatsink
8. Boot into BIOS and LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS
9. Reboot
10. Overclock like a MoFo
11. ???
12. Profit

Thanks for taking a look and for your help!

Nothing special required, you will be fine if you do what you just said above. Enjoy your new cpu.

Clear CMOS anytime you change hardware.

I did the same upgrade 6 months ago. Only 2 cores were recognized, so after lots of work ( including trying another identical MB) I tried online forums. Got tons of suggestions, only one worked. Had to do complete clean OS reinstall. Guy who posted that solution got ridiculed by many, yet it was the only solution that worked. Takes awhile, but doesnt hurt to do in any event. Hopefully clearing CMOS will do it for you, but if not dont waste any time- just do reinstall. Start copying files and getting drivers ready now so you will be prepared.

Best of luck. The Q9650 performs well for me!

I changed from an E8500 to a Q9650 also; you won't be disappointed.

I did reinstall my OS when changing the motherboard, but not when changing the CPU... it's not normally required for such a small change. I didn't even clear CMOS.

The chip should tell BIOS everything it needs to know, but if you run into problems then I'm sure kahuna's advice is good.

Clear CMOS anytime you change hardware.
And might also want to update your BIOS first. ;)

All of the bios's on the UD3P seem to do well with the q9650. Set correct Ram voltage. Enjoy!!

Nice!! I am currently running on the F9 BIOS. I am not a big fan of beta BIOS. I am not sure when F10 will be released.

I have been reading the UD3P thread so hopefully I'll be able to get a good O/C in a relatively short period of time.
