Just curious, has anyone removed and replaced the TIM from the Rampage II Gene's NB, in an attempt to lower the temperature of the NB? Is this really necessary? For my system I'm going to use a 40mm fan over the NB for cooling, I'm just wondering if anyone did replace the TIM on this board, with worthwhile results.
Thanks.

I always do it to my boards now ever since seeing how badly done it was on my Maximus Formula board.
Was like cement on there though, dropped temps by 5-8c as well (though probably as half the chip didn't have any coverage of TIM on there!)

Sir hardwareCanuck Jody did it in his review, his comment :
The thermal paste used on the north bridge - seen in the second photo above - is an interesting yellow substance. It dries hard and is quite the pain to get off. Our thermal testing done below was with the stock thermal material shown here so there really is no need to replace this material. It may not look like the norm, but it certainly seems to do its job well enough. We would have liked to see a copper plate sit on the north bridge instead of the aluminum one ASUS went with. Again, however, the thermal testing below will illustrate more than adequate cooling so we can't really demand much else.

The yellow crud that is used on the R2Gene is awful....i had to use a credit card to chisel mine off and replaced with OCZ Freeze. Have not tested thoroughly yet but it has to be better....and like mentioned, it didn't even cover half the NB die

Seriously, I don't think there's any need to remove it. I left the stock heat-sink on but removed the modular piece and put a Noctua U6 on there, it's cooling the NB area just great.
